AT&T forcing me to give up my BB.

Yes, I'm still rocking a Blackberry Key2 Red Edition. 6 gb of Ram and 128 gb. It does pretty good and i've had it for a year and a half.
AT&T is turning off most unlocked phones. THey are claiming they aren't 5G compatible and you will of course, have to get an AT&T branded phone unless of course, you get an Iphone or Pixel.
Bastards.

Idk what they’re telling you but LTE phones will be around for 20+ years minimum

Sure, but they don't have to let them on their network.

Just asking: can you give a little more context or source?
Other than it being time to once-again replace the battery, my old Q10 speed-king still keeps everyone else in my business on their toes.
That being said, the 5G monster looms on the horizon. Word of a new BB -- even if it's just a TCL-built phone -- seems to have disappeared from Crackberry.

It's not LTE that's the problem, it's their 3G. AT&T doesn't support VoLTE on unlocked phones (well most as there are a few exceptions and workarounds). In order for unlocked phones to make calls, they have to drop down to 3G W-CDMA. And because AT&T is shutting down 3G soon, unlocked phones won't have a voice fallback.
In order to make calls in the future, you're going to need a phone capable of voice over LTE (VoLTE). That means that only phones sold by AT&T, newer iPhones, newer Galaxy S phones, and newer Pixels will work moving forward. AT&T could whitelist batches of popular unlocked phones and phones bought from competing carriers like T-Mobile does, but they refuse.

... so you're now free to go elsewhere?

I dont think this is true.

DId some more research, it does appear that if you can't do VoLTE you are going to get fricked.

ATT has a PDF online of unlocked devices that support their voLTE feature. It includes most popular brands. Apple, Samsung, Pixel, even OnePlus I think.
Blackberry as you remember them exist only now as Cylance. What you are buying now as blackberry is just a Chinese phone maker with naming rights. Just get an unlocked phone from another manufacturer.
This is being typed on an unlocked OnePlus 8T bought direct from OnePlus and I have voLTE

Damn son! I loved my Q10 and my Passport that followed. The KeyOne was terrible. Wish I could still use a BB but the majority of my business communications have moved to text and iMessage is king.

I will disagree. I have the BB Key2 Red edition and it is great. Screen could be bigger but I can live with it. Does everything I need.

I don’t have any experience with the Key2. The KeyOne was bad enough to scare me away for good.

Had a Z10 not long after they came out, then upgraded to a Z30. Absolutely loved it while they were still updating BB10, and most 3rd party Android apps were still working.
Once they abandoned the o/s and went full Android though the writing was on the wall.
