For all of you wondering who is going to jump in line to pay over $1000 for a new smartphone, I give you the killer app.
I wouldn't buy a phone because of this, but you know there are a ton of people out there who will.

Marketing - the X is $1,000 - so now the 8+ at $800 - $200 less looks a whole lot more tempting than $130 cheaper.
This should increase sales of the 8+
