John Giannandrea, Google’s former head of search and artificial intelligence, is joining Apple. The hire, first reported by The New York Times, comes one day after the executive announced he was stepping down from his role at Google, itself a surprise move amid a broader executive reshuffle that now makes much more sense in hindsight.

Giannandrea, a machine learning expert who joined Google back in 2010, is a huge get for Apple, which has struggled for years to make progress in fast-moving and increasingly important AI fields like computer vision and natural language processing. Giannandrea will report directly to CEO Tim Cook as the leader of “machine learning and AI strategy,” according to the Times.

Love my iPhone. Never use Siri cause she is a fricking tard.

That being said I can’t see myself really using voice shite anyway.

Alexa changed tons here. Just awesome. Recipes, lists, timers, turning on and off our alarm, when was Chinatown filmed, converting metric to US, listening to Outlaw Country...

As an iPhone user, this is great news. But I have to wonder if Google will let this go without any lawsuits. That guy has to have IP from Google. How do they not have a non-compete clause in his contract?

I don't think it's mainly for the phone though. It's so they can expand their speaker models in the home, much like Amazon has with Alexa.

because they're pretty much illegal and Silicon Valley hiring practices have been scrutinized since this broke: High-Tech Employee Antitrust Litigation

It's to improve Siri overall and hopefully turn it into a platform. Why is Siri able to answer certain questions on one device, but unable to on another?
