Apple files for a new patent: Remotely disabling the cameras

Good job Apple, you are incredibly innovative

slight political side note: I'm 100% sure police wont be using this to keep people from videoing their wrong doings, not at all

The patent shows that Apple may allow iPhone cameras to be disabled through special infrared sensors, giving the example of a concert venue using the technology to make sure no one makes bootleg videos of a touring band.

If this just affects iPhones, I will sell my Apple stock. Article never says anything but iPhones.

I think your appropriate level of cynicism and sarcasm may be burying the lead here. Why would Apple patent this? Could we see concerts that ban non Apple phones? It sounds ridiculous at first glance, but concerts and stadium events already make people go through security checks and won't let unapproved items in. Live content is worth a lot of money in a time shifting, stream on demand world. The NBA just got a nearly 3 times rate increase from ESPN/Turner Sports to $2.6 Billion per year for broadcast rights to their games. What if the young kids, who don't really watch TV anymore, started watching the NBA on Periscope for free? That could be pretty damaging to the value of the rights to live games.

While this is true, it wont happen - phones are a part of our person now, if they even tried to confiscate phones for an entertainment event... I could see some major legal issues.
The odd thing to me, is if this becomes a reality - that would basically mean anyone with an Android device gets to Snapchat and Instagram, while all the Apple devices are disabled. It would be... odd

We're talking about huge amounts of money at stake here, and I do believe Google wants to stream some of this live content on YouTube/Google play, so I think everyone will get on the same page in the end. They probably won't ban phones but I can see both Android and iOS devices supporting this "feature". What they really need to do is limit your ability to record, probably by length of broadcast. These companies want you posting to social media that you're at this great event and your friends aren't, they just don't want pirate streams of live events.

I'm pretty sure I saw this (or something very similar) a couple years ago. Regardless, of all of the Apple patents that I've seen filed over the past 14 years that I've followed Apple, I don't think a single one has actually made it to product.

The glass half full view would be that Apple is patenting the idea so no one else does.

That is most definitely not it, apple has had the music industry in their pocket since iTunes came on the scene

I really don't see people Periscoping events as being that big of a threat to big TV

Mitt Romney thinks this is a wonderful idea.

I'll allow it, considering I wont be in a situation that this could negatively affect me

Dave Chapelle always ahead of the curve
Certainly a little different but same idea. I'd probably be more on board with this at a comedy show. But at a music festival, not as much. Would be a pain to not be able to text a friend where you are so they can find you

As soon as they enter the "no-phone zone," however, the pouches will have locked shut, preventing anyone from firing off so much as a winking emoji. Need to make a call or send an email? No problem. Simply leave the designated zone (and head, say, to the lobby bar), and, as you move past several strategically placed stations, the pouches can now magically be unlocked.

So they'll stop 10% of the audience from recording video while the other 90% will be doing whatever they want? Sounds like a great way to sell phones. And if the music industry is in their pocket, how come they were among the last to have the match and streaming service?

why not kjust put a piece of tape over the IR sensor.

Posted on 7/1/16 at 9:41 am to BaddestAndvari
The bigger piece from this technology is the creation of a virtual tour guide. IR signals go out from various tourist spots or parts of a museum to interact with the user. Anyone who travels knows this could be huge. Or imagine if equipment is tagged for maintenance.

you realize this point shows they are more connected to the music industry than others, it's pretty well documented how much money the production companies are losing from streaming services compared to purchased albums. Like, seriously lulz

Then why would they allow other streaming services to exist before Apple's?

also don't forget before streaming services, the music industry bolstered Amazonmp3 by letting them sell DRM-free MP3s, and wouldn't let Apple do the same. Eventually Apple got the ability to do so when it dropped all-$.99 pricing to go with variable pricing, which the industry had wanted for a long time
Once the iTunes Store got really big and dominant, the music industry has looked for ways to chip away at the monopoly and diversify their distribution options
