Techradar website.

quote:

If you're using an older Mac or MacBook with an Intel chip, then we have bad news, as Apple has quietly killed off support for any device sold before 2020 that doesn't have an Arm-based Apple silicon chip (that is, Macs with M1 chips or newer, or the A18 Pro, in the MacBook Neo's case).

Apple announced macOS 27 Golden Gate at WWDC 2026, and highlighted new features and performance improvements. However, it didn't reveal which Macs would be getting the upcoming operating system, which is due to release 'this Fall', so expect it about October.

Instead, we found confirmation tucked away at the bottom of the macOS news site. This is a bit cheeky, as it's a major change that will impact a lot of people, though it's also not that surprising, as it was only a matter of time before Apple dropped support for older Macs.

If you don't get the most recent/updated OS, doesn't this affect your ability to use apps in the ecosystem?

End of support isn't an outlandish concept. Every tech vendor does it.

As long as it was notified well ahead of time and documented, this isn't a big deal. Dropping support out of the blue is bullshite

The 2020s still run like a top. Hell, they damn sure don't mind taking AppleCare money for them.

I'm not surprised at all and it has nothing to do with Apple specifically. It was only a matter of time before hardware manufacturers followed software developers by forcing subscriptions with an EOL cycle of 5 years. Who is ready to lease their next computer?

Linux groups are already taking advantage of Apple distancing themselves from their Intel customers. Kubuntu in particular is “theme-able”, and has a Mac theme that makes your Intel Linux install look and act like a Mac. Even has gumdrop buttons.

It’s a much bigger deal when the hardware is permanently locked to the software but it’s not like these users didn’t know what they were getting into.

You can’t expect to buy something from big tech and actually own it. Thats not how they operate.

Like Microsoft did with deprecating processors that were supported for Win11 installations and updates, and then are just ... not?

Were you forced to upgrade to W11 on release to make your hardware deprecated? Absolutely not. W10 was still supported for years after W11 release

To get security updates, yes. And then six months later (I think it was 2H2024) I no longer got security updates because of the unsupported processor.

It did give me the opportunity to see that Mint runs slower than Win 11 on the same hardware, so there's that.
