Got a new stereo with carplay. Does anyone know of a way to make it use google maps instead of apple maps in the home screen?

Like in below if it used google maps by default instead?

I use waze and it autostarts it. I don't know if I have looked for Google Maps on it, but if you have the app installed on your phone and it is carplay compatible, it will show in your apps.

How did you get it to do that?

Not sure it just autostarts because that's what I was using last. Google maps does show in my carplay apps.

Is there a way to make it a default service. If you use Siri, which I do a lot, it will automatically default to Apple maps.

I believe your phone has to be plugged into one of your USB ports for it to show up on your display. Unplug it and it goes away, at least in my ‘16 GMC.

How do you add that garage door open? Has to be set up through Apple Home?

That’s not what he’s asking.

On the new update you can use a home screen but I don’t think you can default google maps to it.

I think all OEM units still need cables, but there are aftermarket ones that do use carplay through Bluetooth now. I know Pioneer makes one.

I don't think so permanently.

Click the squares on the bottom left part of the screen. Will show all available CarPlay apps you have installed on your phone. I think Google Maps is one. I know Waze is.

Might have misunderstood the question if you’re asking how to force CarPlay to show same view but with Google.

Don’t think that’s possible.

Yeah, he is wanting google to be default and I don't think Apple gives you that option.

Yea that's what I'm asking. It would just be a minor convenience as I take different ways to and from work depending on traffic, and apple maps is awful at predicting traffic.

I'll try this out, but I'm having doubts it comes on automatically like you said

What do you mean by automatically? All you have to do is push one button on your radio to open it.

I think he means on the CarPlay Dashboard screen, where maps and pertinent shortcuts will appear

I don’t know if this still works, but if you use Siri to ask for directions and say Hey Siri, give me directions to (wherever you want) “VIA TRANSIT” it will bring up google maps instead of Apple Maps.

Dam. Can you link to one of these units? I'm having trouble finding one...
