So, like most women these days, my wife has started to take a crap ton of pictures. Right now she is using a Nikon D3200 with a afs nikkor 18-55 lense. I have no clue what that means or the quality of it.

What would be the next bump up? Maybe a fully automatic (heard her talk about those with a friend), and better lense. I sense she wants to do some photography for people.

Are you trying to surprise her with a new camera? If she is looking to upgrade, she probably has an idea of what she wants.

With that said, the first thing to upgrade would be the lens. A 50mm f/1.4 will probably be a lens that she will be interested in. My favorite lens is my 70-200mm f/2.8.

Also, since she has already been using Nikon, she will probably want to stick with it. I prefer Canon, but there are tons of lens options for both.

Get an FX (full-frame) sensor. Suggest Nikon D810. Great dynamic range on the color and the video is kick-arse. Hard to explain here, but it will give you a big bump in your photo "experience".

Then comes the lenses. You also need FX lenses to take full advantage of the FX sensor, but you can also use DX lenses but loose a lot of pixels. The lenses that come with the Best Buy/Wal-Mart/Costco packages are junk (so to speak). Look at Nikon-brand lenses with minimum f/stop of 2.8 (big aperture; lets in lots of light; fast shutter speed >> less camera blur. Do your homework. Hang on to your pocket book.

You can also rent the pricey lenses here (special occasions) for a relatively low rate: Lens Rentals (Memphis) Also suggest buying used lenses on Ebay or Craigslist. Never been disappointed going this route...

I agree with this. I have 70-200 VR and the old workhorse 80-200 - both f/2.8

She prob doesn't know the models and all that. I was just wanting photography quality type stuff but noting over kill.

Would just a lense upgrade be good enough?

Anyone a birdwatcher? What are some good options for more powerful cameras for stills and video?

The d810 looks like a beast. She won't be taking videos, so is it necessary?

A D810 would be overkill IMO. That's a camera for someone who hat really knows what they're doing. Has she read "Understanding Exposure" and put those practices to use? The D810 is anything but a fully automatic camera. It's a camera that is best utilized in fully manual mode and you have to know what you're doing in that mode.

She probably better suited learning to really use what she has. The 18-55 is a kit lens and she could b befit from other lenses.

Get a d5300 and get a 35mm 1.8g lens with a 55-300mm lens. Also get a circular polarized lens, uv filter, tripod and remote. Get lightroom and learn editing.

Your still dealing with a DX sensor (not full frame) on the D3200. Even if you get an FX lens, you're still limited to a DX sensor on the D3200. Ditto the the D5300. Some cropping will occur to make the image fit on the smaller DX sensor. The FX sensors are 50% bigger. Google it/Read up on this to see the difference. Tons of easy to understand articles - with examples. Here's a straightforward example: LINK

That's really not a big deal. Unless he goes into it as a serious hobby that cropping won't make a big difference. Just simply getting a prime lens at about a 1.4 or 1.8 will improve his quality by just being a faster lens and his photos will have more clarity and he can get some nice bokeh from a 35 or even 50mm lens.

Even putting on it on the aperture setting will get better photos. Just learn exposure and focal length to better understand what your aperture so capture in the background and foreground.

While I'm not a bird photographer, I would like to be. I really want to get the Tamron 150-600mm.

Here are a bunch of photos on flickr that is filtered to just photos taken with that lens LINK

If she's wanting to stay with Nikon, get the D7200. It's a mid level camera, one of the best in class. If she doesn't care to stay with Nikon, get the Pentax K-70. Best crop sensor camera on the market right now.

If she likes her camera, then I would go the lens upgrade route. Prime fixed lenses 50mm, 70mm, 35mm are good choices for someone wanting to do more portraits.

Agree here. Spending money on the glass is almost always the best choice. She can always upgrade the body of the camera later. Lenses cam last decades.

Me too. Her friend's mom said it. I was guessing you can just push down on the button and it constantly takes photos???? I literally have zero understanding of photography.

You guys are giving me tons of help though!
