Local camera stores are difficult to find. I live in NOVA and while you'd think that we would have several there is only one. Most people buy online now.

What about flashes? Do you need to upgrade those for still portrait type stuff?

Any private classes in BR for this stuff?

Id recommend always going with glass! If she is wanting to do portraits, you can't go wrong with the 85 1.8 lens, but if you don't want to spend that much the 50 will work.

You could also buy her a subscription to adobe cloud so she can have access to lightroom and photoshop, and id also get her a subscription to kelbyone.com so she can get tips on photography and lightroom/photoshop.

If you want to get into flash, go with something inexpensive but good like the youngnuo iii, and some triggers so she can use it off the camera. She would also need a softbox or umbrella and a stand. These can be found cheap on amazon, don't spend to much until you know she is gonna stick with it.

Her camera can already do that. As far as image quality a D5xxx and d7xxxx will share the same sensor as your d3200. You won't get better image quality with steping up the the next level body. What you will get is more controls, dials, etc, better autofocus system, faster operation (if she understands how to use all of the new buttons). If she is the type that mainly uses the automatic settings then honestly you won't get much out of upgrading to a D5xxx or D7xxx. The exception will be if you want to start buying old legacy autofocus glass. All new autofocus lenses have the autofocus motor built into the lens. Older nikon lenses from the 70's 80's and 90's had the autofocus motor built into the body and the body would turn a screw in the lens to autofocus the lens. You might hear this refereed to as screw driven lenses. You can get some really nice lenses that are screw driven that are much cheaper than their current AF-S siblings. (AF-S is the Nikon nomenclature for the focus motor in the lens).

I too would suggest upgrading her lenses. The particular lens she has isn't very good at gathering light so it doesn't take as good a picture indoors or in low light v. a "faster' lens.

If she likes to take pictures of people what is better than a new lens is a good proper tilt/swivel flash. Nikon's flash system can't be beat. A good flash will let you capture natural looking great pictures indoors without that flash look. Photography is simply the art of capturing light. There is no greater tool for the photographer than to be able to control the lighting on the subject. A good proper tilt/swivel flash can do that. With a $300 flash and your cheap $100 kit lens you would have a more versitile setup for capturing indoor pictures of people than if you went out and bought a $1700 lens.
