Depends on your needs.
How big of a screen do you want?
Is 5g important to you?
Do you want to be able to install a linux OS on it?
Do you prefer Android or IOS?
It's really a matter of preference. You're not going to go wrong with anything released in the last year or two. It really just depends on what you want.

i just bought a wifi6 router and i have wireless chargers all over so i think i may pass on this since it doesn't include either one.
what phone in 2021 doesn't include wireless charging?

I gave up on wireless. Since I plug in when driving for Android Auto, I rarely need to charge at home or at the office.

I've decided I'm going with the Oneplus 8t since it can be had for $499 brand new. Not spending $450 on mediocre hardware in the 5a

the *only* thing keeping me from jumping ship is the 'for now' unlimited google photo/video storage. i will sorely miss that if i move to a non-google product but maybe i should just pony up for additional storage.
eta i see it as $599 brand new. Where are you seeing it for $499?

I don't take many pictures and videos that need to be saved, so it wasn't a worry for me. The 8t offered basically everything under the sun as far as specs for an incredible value. Like completely shits on the 4a/5a

no kidding. 5G MIMO, ax, 48mp cameras, big arse battery..damn. talk about your futureproof device.
do you have a link for the $499 price? i only see a $549 back-to-school offer.

Bestbuy is $499 with activation, there's one on Swappa BNIB for $499 and there are a few on ebay BNIB
Edit: And that's for the 12gb/256gb model. The 8gb/128gb model is probably cheaper

Out of curiosity, is the 8t a better phone than the 7t Pro? I saw this deal earlier today, and sounds like it can be had for 325 with a paypal coupon: LINK

No. And that McLaren edition wont be supported by ATT networks soon

Yeah, just saw some chatter on that. Trying to find my mom a reasonably priced unlocked phone for VZ. Chatter on that phone is inconsistent as to whether it would work as well. Something about not supporting all of the necessary bands. Will keep an eye out for other deals, as it's not urgent, she's just got a much older phone at this point and could use a refresh.

seems like a solid phone even if I lose some of my google photos capabilities.
eta also i'm on tmobile and i keep hearing that i might have to tell them to 'enable sprint towers' as an option on the phone itself to expand coverage. i guess i could not be a lazy person and google that...

Moto G7 play with an obliterated screen
I've had it for exactly one year. Only reason I have it is because I put my OG pixel on to charge one night, woke up the next morning to it being a paper weight. The G7 play was the best phone walmart carried since I needed something for communication haha

Last Christmas when my family forced me to get a new phone, I went with the Samsung A71. It's in this price range but not waterproof, nor does it have wireless charging like their flagship phones. It also has a SD card slot so for an additional $20 it went from 128 GB of storage to 256 GB almost instantly. I've had zero issues with it since I got it. As a light user I can get two days use out of it on a single charge.
