What's some of the things to look for and/or what's the best protection for the money? I'm assuming also that most come with an auto renewal setup?

Whatever comes with Windows.

For home use, the built in Windows Defender suite has been more than sufficient for quite a while now. No need to complicate it any further than that.

I quit buying software that slows my PC down and just use the Microsoft defender stuff. It's more than sufficient.

If you really feel that you need something beyond what Windows provides, the best one I've seen (between being secure and doesn't bog down your machine) is ESET HOME Security.
It honestly depends on WHAT you're doing and WHERE you're going. If you're downloading a lot of files from file sharing sites, you probably want something fairly robust; if you're just browsing the web, Windows' embedded protection tools are generally sufficient.
