The isp I signed on to for fiber is selling me 2.5gbe fiber, but failed to mention that their router doesn't have any 2.5gbe ethernet ports. So I'm looking for as cheap as possible, but something that has 1- 2.5gbe port wan and at least 1- 2.5 gbe lan port. I can control the rest via a managed switch.

Would prefer it to not be with wifi included since I run my own ubiquiti ap wifi.

I've looked on Amazon but everything seems either overkill or has wifi. The only exception would be the mini N100 built systems using pf sense. I'm open to doing this as well, but would like to be right at $200 if possible.

That's frickin' funny.

Since you already have a Ubiquiti AP, I'll just point to the Cloud Gateway Max (no storage variant). It will only route at 1.5gb with IPS turned on, but I've seen reviews where it maxes the 2.5gb port with IPS turned off. I'm not sure if an N100 would do any better.

If you could part with more money the UDM-Pro can do IPS routing up to 3.5gb I believe.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for but it just didn't show up on my amazon searches.

Buy direct from Ubiquiti. It'll cost you the $12 shipping or whatever, but at least you'll get the 2 year warranty.

As someone who severely underutilizes my gig, wtf are you going to do with 2.5 ? I mean honestly ? get faster speed to a hardwired pc ?

Kids who stream and game. Wife who steams multiple devices at the same time. Me with torrents and stream with all my security cameras. The 2.5g will be on my main system AND torrents.

I have no idea if I actually //need// it, but ef it... it's $20 extra a month and I'm looking to future proof and not wanting to find a bottleneck. And get better protection and stats.

short of whatever torrent system you have setup, none of those devices probably care about 2.5...

not shitting on it, I just only have like three things in my house that utilize it and I tend to be ahead of the curve

Here's their response to asking if they offered a 2.5 port. Equally funny in my book.

"Our routers are capable of 2Gig speeds, however the LAN ports are limited to 1Gig. The reason for this is with 2gig max bandwidth, if one of your hardwired devices is using up the full 2gigs of bandwidth that you have, other devices on the network would suffer poor connection. If you are wanting a router that has LAN ports rated for higher than 1gig speed, you can always use a third party router instead, however we would be more limited when it comes to troubleshooting that equipment if any issues may occur. This is the way. Once you go pfsense, you don't go back.

That's nothing wrong with their response. Having a 2gb uplink allows for multiple devices to share that bandwidth but each individual wired device would be limited to 1gb.

Before 1 gb was common for switched ports, uplinks were 1gb and the switch ports were 10/100.

Lawrence Systems

Although it is a very minor thing IMO. Opnsense does have a much better/user friendly interface.

I moved away from pfsense when it came out that they were going to charge for plus licenses, forcing users to either pay the fees or downgrade to CE

Has this actually been put into place yet?

Actually I'm not sure. I've always used the CE edition with no problems.

$20 extra from what EPB 2.5 is a bit under $100 now. That's not a bad upcharge from gig if it is around the average $70 price.

10 gig is still 300 a month and 25 gig is 1500. Pretty crazy the speeds we can get at home now. Now we just need trains to stop taking down large swaths of the service area. Still not sure what that was about This was the message we got for fiber being down for 24 hours from yesterday afternoon til this afternoon.

quote:

Unrelated construction by an outside organization apparently affected EPB fiber optic lines which were then damaged by a passing train.

You definitely don’t need it. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s fun. I’ve got a 1g connection and appreciate being able to download and install a 150G game from Steam in 15m, but your entire household would probably use about 250mb/s if they were all going full tilt simultaneously.

Seems like pfsense put out more bad news this week. Not supporting offline installs anymore.

And I just borked my pfsense box messing with too many things yesterday. So it appears today I will be joining the club of opnsense again once I restore my pfsense and get my ports and stuff copied.
