Supposedly Google is phasing out Google play music in favor of YouTube music at some point in the near future.

Correct, Google has 2 music streaming services competing with each other right now, YouTube Music and Google Play Music.

If you subscribe to Google Play Music you automatically get YouTube Music Premium as well, it used to be YouTube Red with no ads but that died which blows since the 2 music streaming services are the exact same from the same company.

I converted to using YT Music exclusively ahead of the death of Google Play Music, it's much much better all around anyways.

YouTube Music

Nothing changed about YouTube red other than it being called premium now for me from what I can tell.

Google Play Music used to include YouTube Red (adfree youtube) now it only includes YouTube Music Premium, not YouTube Premium.

YouTube is killing one of the best parts of Google’s music streaming service

They will have to include local music in YouTube music. I can not imagine them not having a way to listen to previously "purchased" music.

But if not, there are several other Android apps for playing music files

Google has confirmed to The Verge that YouTube Music will take on all of the key features of Google Play Music. And that includes user uploads.

Google’s current goal is to move GPM subscribers over to YouTube Music at some point in 2019.

Anyone got any thoughts on whether it might be a good idea to just wait 2 months until the Pixel 3 rolls out to then grab a Pixel 2? How much does the price usually drop when the next Gen comes out?

I signed up originally for YouTube red and got Google play music free and still do. 10.99 a month.

Youtube red doesn't exist anymore so that's not possible.

The only thing you get now is youtube music premium, the music service that is the same as Google music. Hence why they are killing off Google music.

If you want YouTube premium, it's $2 more per month on top of the 9.99 for YouTube music.

I still pay the OG fee of 7.99 for both. I ain't letting that go until I have to.

I will probably have to change when Google music switches to YouTube.

I think I read August 28th the month to month grandfathered in part ends, and if you bought a year you have it until the end of that years subscription.

I hope this amounts to not much more than just a name change. I've been using Play Music for years - it's one of the most utile apps in my life and seems way superior to all the other ones. The family plan is killer as well.

I pay 10.99 and that's been the charge as far back as I can scroll on my banking app (Jan 2017). I have YouTube ad free, plays after I close, has floating picture in picture when I close etc. Maybe something else is changing but it hasn't yet.

I signed up for YouTube red (now called premium) and got play music free, not vice versa if that matters.

Weird, 10.99 is pretty high. It was 7.99, then they raised it to 9.99 and if you stayed at either of those price points you are grandfathered in until they kill off Google Music and then it's the same for everyone 11.99 if you want all of that (YouTube Music Premium + YouTube Premium).

Not a big deal if yours is 10.99 already anyways.

I was grandfathered in at 7.99 but I canceled when they switched over and only subbed to YouTube Music Premium for 9.99 but it took less than a day to miss YouTube adblock and background playback so now I pay 11.99 for all of it.

Download the YouTube Music app and see for yourself, it's completely different. You've got about a year left of Play Music.
