Horse fricking shite!! No one is forced to buy a goddamn doorbell camera. And if you purchase this item and you don't understand what you're getting into beforehand then shame on you.

It is not quite that simple. People's outdoor cameras are recording other people's houses, cars, walking, etc. Those people are having their regular activities at their house recorded and submitted to a central database with no consent of their own.

If enough people in an area have outdoor cameras, others in that area have lost their right to privacy without consenting.

You don't need consent or have a right to privacy when the cameras are on your own property and with the intent of monitoring your own property. Move somewhere where you aren't on top of your neighbors.

Privacy is dead people. No amount of "open" solutions, VMs with Linux, or custom phone OS ROMs are going to change that

I disagree.

As our buddy Max said, a lack of privacy is not compatible with a free society. Many have lost sight of that or haven't realized it yet, but I believe in the near future people will begin to take their privacy back. It's very tempting to trade privacy for convenience (I've done it, and still do it), but I think we will see many products and services with a focus on privacy in the next 5 to 10 years. And I think a lot of people will see the value in that.

Not in every case.

But yes I can keep my home video feeds within my home network pretty easily.

Because it's better to have specific applications running in its own environment without pooled resources

If you are walking or driving on a public street, you have no expectation of privacy.

If you decide to change clothes in front of an open window and a camera happens to catch you that is on you. No different than someone walking by on the street seeing you in the window.

Would be most efficient. That way you can allocate the proper resources to each

Easily.

Youtube search how to setup proxmox server and you'll hit lots of good results. Proxmox is a fairly easy hypervisor to get setup with some basic VMs

I would highly recommend buying a new 128gb SSD or something like that to test it out on first to see if it's something you want to do

Edit: If you already have a raided drive setup currently for mass storage, it's probably not worth the hassle of trying to get everything rebuilt

I'm running a i5 clarkdale (gen before sandy bridge) and the processor runs fine for what i have it doing. I only have 4 gb ram and need to up it to 8.

my host os is win10 64bit. the VM is lubuntu in VMWare player.

if you already have an OS installed and want to play with/learn how to use VMs, I'd recommend download VMWare Player. Virtualbox is also free, but i had issues with passing USB devices to the VM. I find it easier in VMWare.

I don't know of anywhere that sidewalks and streets don't go in front of neighbor's houses.

The deployment of connected home security cameras that allow footage to be queried centrally are simply not compatible with a free society. The privacy issues are not fixable with regulation and there is no balance that can be struck. Ring should be shut down immediately and not brought back.

He's all for it up to the point where it would mean he gets laid off. I guarantee that at that point his stance would begin to change.

No one is forcing homeowners to buy Rings, Alexas, etc. Wanting this stuff "shut down immediately and not brought back" is simply ridiculous.
