Amazon Echo now supports Fire TV

This seems like something that should have already worked, but it didn't until recently. I got an email last week letting me know my Echo Dot could now talk to my Fire TV and it works as well as you'd expect. You just have to link your Fire TV to your Echo in the Alexa app and you're good to go.

Interesting. I just found out last week I could link my Echo to Plex. Asked it to play The Big Lebowski and it told me "I love you, but sooner or later you're going to have to face the fact that you're a goddamned moron. Playing The Big Lebowski"

Unless I am missing something, this just doesn't seem all that useful to me. If everything is off, I will still need to turn my TV on manually (I guess if I had a smart TV, this would be different). If the Fire TV is already on, it has Alexa built in. So, this new Echo feature just saves me from having to hold the Mic button.

I have my Echo and Harmony Hub linked and it is awesome.
This should make it even better.

when it can turn the volume up/down and properly handle tv input changing, searching and starting and pausing shows all via voice for ALL DEVICES hooked to my tv i'm interested.
been a few years since i was on the harmony wagon, maybe time to come back.

Not everyone is on the couch with the remote when they are watching TV. I've often found myself doing things in other rooms during a commercial break that took longer than expected so I was glad to be able to say "Alexa pause". Sometimes I will have shows on in the background while cooking or on my computer at the kitchen table where the remote isn't available, so it's helpful in that situation too. I can think of plenty of scenarios where it would be helpful for a parent to start or stop a show when not near the remote.
I also expect Alexa to become a lot more useful in time as developers program for her. Just like Siri is quicker at some specific tasks than navigating to, opening and using an app, Alexa will at some point make many voice commands faster to execute than using an app's interface.
Right now to navigate to a DVRed show on PlayStation Vue I have to hit the menu button which can take a few seconds to load show thumbnails, then go to My Shows, which again has to load thumbnails, then click on the show I want to watch, load thumbnails, and then scroll through and select the episode I want to watch. That's a lot of clicking, navigating, and waiting for thumbnails to load vs what I hope to be able to do in the future "Alexa play the next episode of SomeShow".

I only use it for powering everything on and changing inputs and whatnot.
I still find the remote easier for volume, and general moving around.
Maybe the Echo and FireTV link will change that.

When did they announce this? I must have missed it.
I would still have to turn my TV off, but my TV automatically turns on whenever I press any button my FireTV remote.
I'll have to test this out when I get home.

Love the update. Going to try it when I get back home Saturday. Still waiting on all the echo's to be able to sync music together.

Do you have an echo? Just add the Plex skill and follow the set up instructions. Sadly, Plex has to be open for it to work.

Thanks. I'll try it out with Plex open.

Does it? I thought with Skills you could say "Alexa ask Skill to do Action" It is wordier than you'd like but I believe "Alexa ask Plex to play the Big LeBowski" is supposed to work.

It does work if Plex on your main player (Apple TV for me) is running either in the foreground or background. It can't tell the Apple TV to launch Plex because there is no Apple TV skill for Alexa.

I couldn't be happier with the Harmony Hub. It works TV, Soundbar and Fire TV. It works pretty well with Alexa. I don't really shuffle through inputs though.
