I have two Garmin units. One is a regular screen and one a wide screen. I like them better than using a phone because you can just stick them right by where the brake tag is and see it without taking your eyes off of the road.
Make sure you can get one that you can update the maps on

You can do this with a phone too. There are plenty of companies out there that make phone mounts. Just ask your next Uber driver for recs, they use them all the time and they cost less than a Garmin.

Then I've got to have my phone plugged in or else it'll die in a couple of hours. I just prefer having them separate.
Plus, my standalone GPS shows logging roads and fire roads that Google Maps does not

I enjoy just adding my clients as favorite on my Garmin - it hold I think up to 1500 . Over about 10+ years I have used my gps as navigation and my phone as a backup

Get a thing that sticks to your dashboard or windshield and holds your phone.

Depends on how often you use it. If it's not that often, you can buy a one day subscription to the Navigator app for $1.99. It'll talk you through the drive so you can watch the road.
I just use a phone and pull over if I get lost.

Get a navigation unit that uses Android Auto from your phone. I have a new truck and this is the best system I have ever used. I just plug into a USB port and everything runs through the head unit... I have integrated navigation in my truck already, but Android Auto just makes it better (kind of like going from iPhone to Android, it just works better). Waze is supposed to be coming soon to Android Auto too.

I have a newer Garmin and it's great. All those that are saying phone must not drive long distances. I drive multiple hours every day and I use my phone for business calls and emails, can't afford to have it tied up too much with GPS. If on I-10 I'll use Waze on my phone to supplement the Garmin but that's really the only time.
