4K TV question

Just bought a Samsung QLED Q70 4K tv.

I mainly use a fire stick as well as a local tv antenna for programming. I'm guessing I need to upgrade my fire stick as well as my antenna to be able to play programs in 4K?

I'm a cord cutter, so mainly wondering if my current programming is putting my new fancy tv to its full use?

Thanks in advance

edit: The apps I mostly use are Netflix, HBO, ESPN, ABC, NBC, HULU, and AT&T TV

Not necessarily. I imagine most streaming services that offer 4k content would have an available app that you can download to your new tv.

What steaming services do you use? Netflix, Amazon, YouTube tv, etc.

If you want to watch 4K through your firestick then you need to upgrade to the one capable of broadcasting 4K.

And the App you install has to support 4K which is a crapshoot right now.

Netflix and Hulu have 4K content, along with Amazon Prime, YouTube, Vudu and I’m sure others. But that doesn’t mean everything on there is 4K. It has to be a show filmed/produced in 4K. On Netflix it will have a 4K ultra HD or HDR logo next to the title to let you know. You may have to change your Netflix plan to include the 4K service

And I don’t believe any of the regular cable broadcast channels are in 4K

HBO is supposed to be offering 4K content fairly soon as well

you should have some smart apps. use those first because they not only support 4K but also HDR and likely, dolby-vsision.

yes you want to research carefully any input device. Make sure it can do dolbyvision because you paid alot of money for that TV to look the best it can so don't miss out on that by not getting a device that cant handle that. i am not in the market right now so i don't know which devices do what but I don't think roku sticks do dolbyvision.

You do not need a new antenna.

Over the air channels broadcast ATSC 1.0. Within that standard, video is broadcast primarily in high definition – either 720p (aka progressive) or 1080i (aka interlaced).

4K and The Future of Over-the-Air Broadcast TV

There are no 4K Over-the-Air TV broadcasts available today. However, the FCC has approved the voluntary rollout of a newer broadcast TV standard known as ATSC 3.0 which – among other benefits – does support beautiful 4K UHD picture quality.

However, even if you have a 4K TV, don’t expect to enjoy Ultra High Def Over-the-Air TV broadcasts anytime soon.

Today, only a handful of stations in ‘test markets’ (Phoenix, Dallas, & Cleveland) even have equipment capable of distributing ATSC 3.0 signals. And on the viewing side, receiving ATSC 3.0 signals requires tuner technology that’s not yet available in even the newest 4K TVs commercially sold in the United States.

What About 4K TV Antennas?
Even though some Over-the-Air TV antennas are being marketed as being ‘4K-ready’, ALL TV antennas sold in North America can pick up the current ATSC 1.0 as well as any 4K ATSC 3.0 broadcasts available in the future. As mentioned previously, the ‘magic’ in accessing future 4K OTA TV broadcasts will come from the tuner connected to that antenna, so don’t choose one TV antenna over another based solely on 4K claims.

Should I Wait to Buy Over-the-Air Cord Cutting Gear?
You could wait… But it may be several more years before 4K ATSC 3.0 signals and products are widely available

But not every app supports all features on all devices. That what sucks. You have to do your homework.

I'd skip the firestick, if you can afford something better. Nvidia shield is the best. Even their 2017 shield beats anything else on the market.

Depends on your wants/needs. If you like simple and effective framerate matching, the firestick with Kodi is a much better solution than the Shield. If you just want options, the Shield has more for sure.

Wouldn’t the smart TV apps be better than a plug in device like fire stick?

And I don’t think Samsung TVs support Dolby vision

I don't know for all TVs but yes, typically the built in apps for netflix, amazon, etc. will provide the best picture and experience. The problem is many TVs don't offer all the apps on their OS. The streaming devices tend to have much wider and broader app selection.

There may also be audio limitations for some TV apps. Dolby Atmos for example would require not only the TV app to have dolby atmos capability but then the HDMI connection to your AVR needs to have eARC not just ARC. If your TV doesn't have eARC, then a streaming device plugged in to your AVR will allow you full dolby atmos.

Last I knew, this was still true.

This is correct. If your current antenna works, don't bother it. Commercial broadcasters will not be 4K until 2 or 3 TVs from now. Spend your energy on your internet pipe, your streams, and your media players.

Your TV will upscale to 4k but the 4k firestick will do a better job. And for $30 or whatever you might as well.

You'll want to upgrade your netflix plan to the premium to get a 4k signal from them on the 4k content that's available.
