3 months after leaving Dish... my thoughts
Cancelling Dish was one of the hardest tech decisions I ever made. Not because I wouldn't be able to adapt, but because our family is so habitual with TV watching. I settled with Hulu + Live TV because it has my locals and other channels we "can't live without."

We have 3 TVs in the house, so I started by removing one Dish receiver and forcing the family to use an Apple TV+Hulu for a week. They surprisingly adapted very well. So I removed another receiver, and within 2 weeks we were totally off of Dish. So I weened them off of Dish and canceled.

It has been nearly three months (and two weeks of college football), so I thought I would share how things are going.

1. We find ourselves being more deliberate when watching TV. It is rarely just on in the background, although if we really wanted to we could.

2. With a family, you really need unlimited internet from your provider. Especially during football season. Luckily, I already had unlimited so not real change in our internet package.

3. There are some channels I do not get with Hulu, such as NFL Network. Luckily, I have found ways to overcome this (like free IPTV).

4. Have a backup plan. I invested in a Tablo, OTA DVR/receiver in case the internet goes down. In a pinch, I also trained the fam on how to hotspot to the apple tv.

5. Keep things simple. For us, we are using Apple TV as the front door to everything, including OTA(antenna). No more switching inputs for different things, everything is on the ATV. This has made the switch incredibly user-friendly.

6. Streaming is great, but it is not perfect. Hulu will sometimes go down (rare, but happens). When this happens, I remind the fam that when thunderstorms roll in, we also lost Dish. We have other ways to watch "tv" when this happens

7. I have plenty of alternatives. Netflix, Prime Video, Youtube - all things we already subscribed to. Now we added Tablo for OTA and Hulu - if any of these things have an outage, something else will be available to watch.

Our Dish bill: $140/month
Our Hulu bill: $74/month*

*Includes all the bells and whistles except premium channels.

This seems really high. I have a mid-tier package on DTV with 6 receivers & my bill is $136/mo INCLUDING 1G UVerse internet. I love the idea of leaving DTV, but can’t justify it yet.

Yep, that was my TV bill. Of course, I had 5 receivers (this includes the Hopper), locals, and a top tier programming package. With taxes and fees it drove the price to right under $140/month. I could have called Dish since I was out of contract and re-negotiated my price lower, but I didn't. At best I probably would have cut my costs to around $100/month after everything.

They frick you on the boxes. They want $10/month per TV (Cox). That’s $70 a month for boxes for me. frick that. I’ve got fire sticks for $15 and I’m rolling with PSVue. If you’re not tech savvy, it’s probably not worth it. My dad wants to convert but I advise him not to. I’d be there on a daily basis “fixing” something.

Tablo is great.

Among other things I like about the ATV is the bluetooth connectivity. When everyone goes to bed I can fire up the BT headset and keep the sound down.

My problem is adding unlimited data to my internet package costs $50 extra a month. On top of that is all the fragmentation that's taking place where every network has their own platform and taking their shows with them. It comes back to me paying the same for satellite or cable or close to it after I went through the numbers.

The biggest problem for OTT is your family and the shitty DVR implementations

You could just pay $50 for a year of IPTV instead and get every channel, sports package and PPV.

This is typically the case when you have a couple TVs in the house. The problem for me is we have 7-8 tvs so with Cox, that's $70-ish/month just for the cable box rentals THEN i paid for the programming. Once I cut the cord, my programming is only a little less, but I don't have to $10 for a box for the guest room tv that rarely gets uses.

Very true. We almost always watch things on demand. I have AT&T TV (DirectTv Now) and we rarely have it on in the background.

I don't need unlimited, but we did have to bump our plan.

My backup plan is an OTA in the attic, but it is rarely used. If it comes down to it, I can let the everyone tether to my phone and get by

On another note, while we have AT&T TV, we don't often use their app. We typically use third party app with the AT&T credentials (ESPN, HBOGO, Nick Jr, DisneyNow, etc)

Right now it's just me, the wife and a toddler. We only have 2 boxes and I have 2 Rokus for the guest room & office (kid doesn't have a tv in their room). I originally had boxes in both rooms, but I went with the Roku and ran extra power supply & HDMI for the cable box. In a pinch, I can take the spare in the master and move it to the office (do this often during college baseball season)

Glad it worked out for you, we couldn't manage because the wife kept adding new "channels". The bill was almost the same price as cable. We are currently revising this now as we find ourselves watching less and less regular tv and more movies & shows on premium channels, and Disney.

Do you have a separate OTA for each TV, or are you able to centralize that?

Once true 5G rolls out, the wired internet ISP’s will have some true competition.

In our neighborhood, it’s ATT or Comcast. No competition. Both will data cap you if you cut cable.

After dropping Dish several years ago we went to OTA antenna for local channels, in MS it was a 40-foot tower with a rotor, booster, & biggest antenna I could find, we picked OTA channels from Shreveport, Alexander, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, & Jackson MS. Had over 60 channels. Used At&t wireless internet for sports and an occasional movie (data cap). Now we are in Walker, OTA antenna, 20+ channels from BR, Spectrum internet $45 month, free AT&T Watch TV app on iPhone, Roku, Chromecast, and Apple TV on my smart TV. Sports not on major networks generally have a Reddit link you can cast from, Amazon Prime and tons of free TV and movies on Roku and chromecast. If a family member has cable you could also borrow the username and password to log in on the app.

I lol'd (literally) at this. My folks are electronically inept.

I have a fire stick at their house, with the Netflix app, with my sign on already logged in. All they would have to do is open the Netflix app and watch whatever.

I can show them how easy it is, come back a week later, and they have no clue how to stream anything on Netflix, OR even how to navigate the Fire Stick menus
