And we may get invited according to this rumour
quote:

Things could get wild if a Fox Sports Australia report is to be believed. According to the report, Peru is at risk of being stripped of their spot in the 2018 World Cup.

Peru was the final team to qualify for the World Cup, defeating New Zealand in the interconfederation playoff November 15th to make the world’s biggest tournament for the first time since 1982. Still, Peruvian news outlet Libero is reporting that a new law under consideration in their congress would place their football federation under the control of Peru’s institute of sport. This would go against FIFA’s mandate that soccer federations operate independently of the national government and that there’s no government interference in the running of the sport. If FIFA banned Peru, that would preclude them from participating in any FIFA-sanctioned tournament.

So, if this wild scenario happened, who would take Peru’s place? Well, FIFA has the right to pick any team they want to replace Peru. From CONMEBOL, the obvious choice would be Chile, the two-time defending Copa America champions and Confederations Cup finalists who inexplicably tanked late to miss out on the World Cup. However, Italian newspaper Tuttosport thinks FIFA could call in Italy, the 4-time World Cup champions who missed the World Cup for the first time since 1958. Still, the New Zealand Herald believes that the United States would be in the mix due to the fact that the nation (through Fox) has dropped over $200M for the World Cup TV rights and because Americans travel in droves to the World Cup.

I'd have to believe the Peruvian government would stop doing whatever they are thinking about doing if it means no World Cup.

frick that. We need to blow up US Soccer and rebuild. We didn't deserve to be in when we lost to Trinidad and we don't deserve to be in if some black magic frickery happens with Peru.

I believe nothing about this report, but I'm laughing at the people saying they don't want the US in the World Cup.

frick that, if this by the slimmest of chances true, I hope we get in... I'm still not over the fact that the next chance I can watch my country in the World Cup is in 2022.

The only positive of this fact is we didn't know that until this year, so it feels more like a 5 year wait than 8.

At least, that's what I tell myself anyways.

Why are you so sure they will qualify for 2022 even?

0% of me believes Peru will get kicked out of the World Cup. But if by some crazy happenstance they are, I think New Zealand should get the invite. Not that I wouldn't be absolutely stoked for the USA to shimmy its way in the back door.

why? They lost fair and square on the field

What is happening here has nothing to do with any other federation, so no other federation should benefit

Put another way, wouldn't this be Peru making a decision at the government level that would knowingly eliminate them from participation in the World Cup for the first time since 1982?

Just not sure I see that happening.

Because I have a soft spot for Kiwis and they came close to qualifying, I don’t know.
