Lest we are forgetting that John Brooks isn’t on the 26 because of a personal rift with Greg…

Are we sure about this?

Or was it because Brooks hasn't been playing anywhere?

I don't rate either

Brooks has played less than 10 minutes in the last 5 months.

ETA: I take that back, he went a full 120 in one match in October in what I guess is the Portuguese equivalent of the FA Cup.

It’s wild the number of people here taking Wynalda at his word.

Excluding Wynalda, it’s a bit odd Gregggg’s quasi-flip/flop comments for not playing Gio. Wynalda’s comments simply apply a plausible reason.

Claudio and Gregg are friends, and Gregg has helped Claudio get jobs in the past. I know y’all hate the guy, but I don’t see Gregg creating rifts with Gio and his family with his job on the line. We all know Gio’s injury history, and I feel Gregg and the medical staff are being extra careful with him. In the end, it’s impossible to know the real truth but if it’s coming from Wynalda I take it with a grain of salt. He’s literally the only person saying this (in a tweet). If more comes to light later that proves Wynalda right then I will gladly admit that I’m wrong.

Agreed. However Wynalda is friends with Claudio as well, and it’s weird that he names him if there wasn’t something.

Still say, regardless of W’s comments, it’s perplexingly gregggs ambiguity and mixed message for his reasons.

Coaches are know for not providing the whole facts about a players fitness to keep the other teams in the dark. I understand the media making a huge deal of it. They make huge deals about everything as part of their job. It’s surprising to me knowledgeable sports fans are making such a big deal of greggies comments. It happens across all sports, not just soccer.

I do get being frustrated with the lack of Gio’s minutes.

Reddit comment I thought was good:

The problem I have with this comment is that it's the WC and we are far from guaranteed to be playing "later in the tournament". What if he subs in against Iran and we lose 1-0 and are knocked out. What's the point of saving him for "later in the tournament"?

I think he’s just more injured/unfit than we realize. He’s an ideal 60 minute sub and is absolutely a difference maker for us, so it wouldn’t make sense to just not play him. I don’t trust managers/players to be honest about injuries during a tournament.

The scuffed pod guys also think Wynalda’s comments are BS

Thanks for sharing. I'll check it out in a little bit but I think the assessment is fair and believable. Agree Wynalda is not the most honest person. Do we think this is a new injury since arriving for the WC or the continued nagging hamstring injury that has plagued Gio?

We’re getting away from the true issue here:

It was trying to get him up to speed. There was some tightness we were guarding against. In the phase of the game we were at, we went with Jordan, who we felt could give us speed and power.”

Who else is reporting it? Everything I've seen from different outlets is referencing Wynalda.

Probably the latter. Hamstrings are notoriously fickle. They are responsible for the most time lost in professional soccer, more so than ACLs. Additionally, the screening tools and return to play metrics for hamstrings aren’t as reliable as they are for ACLs (even those aren’t great to be honest). These injuries kept Gio and Weah out for the greater part of a year. I can understand the abundance of caution. If we want to go far we need a healthy Gio in the knockouts/must-win games.

Would you prefer that he come out and say:
quote:

“…we went with Jordan, who we felt could give us speed and power, rather than Gio because his hamstring is still causing him issues and we are worried to reaggravate the injury during our first WC match.”
