It’s my understanding that starting in 2026 the World Cup will be moving to a format that has 48 teams. There will be 16 groups of 3 teams, with 2 advancing. This means the knockout stages start with 32 teams, rather than 16.

How do y’all feel about this? Personally I don’t like the idea of groups with only 3 teams.

Makes it much easier for two teams to game the system for a favorable outcome on the final match day of their group stage.

Edit - Removed part about less unique matchups ... didn’t think that all the way through.

I love the idea of more knockout games.

It’s means less of a chance to see interesting matches between teams that would normally never play each other and also makes it much easier for two teams to game the system for a favorable outcome on the final match day of their group stage.

How does it mean either of those things?

1. You are only paired with 2 teams, instead of 3. The more teams in the group the more likely you are to play a team you normally wouldn’t?

2. With only 2 games for each team in the group stage, and 1 team sitting out the day of the final game due to an odd number of teams in the group, the last 2 teams playing could effectively prevent the 3rd team from making it into the knockout stage.

This wouldn’t be possible all the time, but could happen a lot more frequently than it does now, because that 3rd team has absolutely no control over what happens. Whereas currently, they would be playing against another group member at the exact same time as the other half of the group plays their game.

32 teams are still going to play 3 teams, just like it is now.

I guess that’s true, I didn’t necessarily think that all the way through.

The pool is doubled though, so we aren't really losing any games, and with more in the knockout stages all 32 of those teams have to be somewhat decent to have made it through.

I don't think you're losing much, and you're also discounting the fact that the entire pool is doubling, while also lamenting that you won't see teams play that normally would.

Might want to check that math.

I've thought about the format a lot. It sounds interesting but honestly I'd rather them just do 12 groups of 4, and figure out a way to still do 32 team knockout stage. Their main concern seemed to be that if you did this, then you add an extra game than previous world cups to the team that makes it to the finals. Just make the tournament a week longer.

I love game 3 of group play. Those were the most exciting games to watch this year because the teams are playing at the same time and they are all playing so hard to make it to the next round. I feel like that would be gone if you do groups of 3, plus collusion would probably happen, making the 2nd game of group play boring.

My main gripe with the change is the 3.5 years leading up to the tournament. I understand we always said the USA will always qualify, then they didn't. With the new set up, it will essentially be a given (obviously it's a given in 2026). Other than faux gold cup excitement, this expansion is really going to remove excitement over USMNT matches. It will also make heartbreak in the WC that much worse.

They need to come up with better deep tie breakers because with only 3 games per group you'll probably see a lot more teams even in the standings.

Only because some big boys crashed and burned early still trying to make it. But normally you end up with an England Belgium game where they are resting players because they were both already through.

And I guess it just depends when certain teams play in the group as well.

Game three of the group stages makes for some of the GOAT matches. Honestly some of them are more intense than the knockout rounds.

ETA: It's stupid to do qualification for the WC over 1.5-2 years only to have two games at the big dance.

The format is ridiculous for several reasons. You’re only guaranteed two games. No simultaneous last group match. Qualifying is now a joke. And as we have seen in the current format there are really bad teams that get in. Now we will have more

But those are the teams that are only going to get 2 games. Any halfway decent team will still get 3 games, unless they completely shite the bed in the group stage.

So we get a group with Japan and Spain we are still a sure thing to advance? frick that. I want the three guaranteed games. That makes it more interesting for every team there.

Sure they do. Win both matches and it doesn't matter what the other two teams do against each other.

I highly doubt we would be in a group with Spain and Japan. Especially if they do the draw like they did this year (by FIFA rankings).

Don't like it. It took years of trial and error to come up with the perfect tourney. I've seen what diluting the Euros did.

This of course has nothing to do with spreading love and the beautiful game but all about more FIFA power somehow.
