The Ivorians have failed to impress at any major tournament during their so-called Golden Generation. Yaya Touré is obviously one of the best midfielders in the world, but their defense is average at best. They've also been huge chokers against mid-level competition in the African Cup of Nations.

Belgium, and Colombia for the same reason, is anyone's guess at this point. It's really hard to get an idea of how well a country will fare without any player's with real major international tournament experience.

We pulled out a draw against Russia in Russia last year, but that was a weird game all around. Russia has been really sporadic with their results of late. Dominate Portugal, lose to Northern Ireland. Destroy the Czech Republic, look inept against an only slightly less inept Greece during Euro 2012.

Just Drew the same:
Belgium
USA
Ivory Coast
Russia

So how do the make the 8 groups for the world cup? Do they just randomly take one team from each of the 4 groups and place them in the 8 WC groups?

I don't know, I'm honestly terrified of Belgium and I think they'll do better than Germany next summer.

I am the biggest Belgium homer on this board, and even I think I this is crazy talk. If this World Cup was in Europe, Germany would be the clear favorite.

Personally I thinks it stinks that the USA ranked 13th at the time, can't be in a group with any asian or concacaf teams at all, I can see the concacaf teams but why should we not have a few strong teams like France , portugal and Engand in our pot ?

The USA has a joke of a qualifying group. We deserve the shitty pot. I would rather be in the bad pot in the World Cup than have to fight through UEFA.

US, Mexico, Costa Rica or Honduras would finish top 4 out of 5 out of Asia at the moment. Only Japan would be a contender. South Korea used to own that region, no longer. Australia is a joke.

Why not have 4 pots, 1-8, 9-16, 17-24, 24-32.

Because then FIFA couldn't play games with the draw.

If you don't know that by now you never will.

Does anyone think the Swiss are a top 8 team.

Portugal arw not 5 as they sit now, even though they missed the top 8 seed.

Israel played them twice, I watched both games, they are not a top 5 team.

My final 4 will be Brazil, Germany, Argentina and a longshot team like USA, Belgum ( not really longshot , in name only ) Bosnia, or an African nation, I feel this is the WC that an up and coming team breaks through.

England & Fraace are crap.

That would be a hell of a lot more rigged that doing it by confederation.

The main problem this time is how they are arriving at the 1-8 seeds.

They just used the current October FIFA rankings and those computer rankings always have a lot of weird outliers in any given month.

In the past, there has been some method in place to correct outliers: FIFA rankings being averaged out over a longer period of time and, more importantly, being weighted by teams' actual performance in actual recent competitive tournaments.

This would still be a tough WC but getting Netherlands and Italy into the first pot -- where they would have been using all previous methods -- would have helped immensely.

Australia could be good by the end of the next cycle. Their problem right now is that they've got a few good old players (Kewell, Cahill, etc.) and a ton of players in the 17-20 year range that they're banking on becoming good.
