I’m super impressed with Congo’s approach. They’re fully willing to concede the midfield because they can’t compete with Portugal there, but they are so much more athletic and they can catch them on the counter with their backs.

The two strikers is perfect because it keeps Portugal’s backline from pressing to high and trapping them.

They need someone to stretch the back line because Ronaldo isn’t going to do it.

Ronaldo's only use for them is to bring on at the 90' mark where he can actually give effort and be an aeriel threat when they're chasing a goal. It was a dumb move to start him. Jota would have been a terror in this team

Spanish speakers on Twitter calling DR Congo "Doctor Congo" is hilarious to me.

Messi stamping a guys leg last night could have been a red card and it wouldn't have been harsh.

except he didn't stamp his leg. The reason everyone that wants it to be a red is posting a still shot instead of a video is that he didn't follow through with any force. It was a yellow but no red IMO.

Hakimi's tackle was worse and also wasn't carded

I don't think it was a red either, but it was definitely a card

My point is that I enjoy the refs letting them play, and not rewarding the theatrics, but there's a line between letting them play and letting it turn into concacaf qualifying

It would take a Zidane like crash out for a ref to send Messi off in this WC

Dunno what you’re talking about but the Messi challenge could have very easily been a red. Hakimi was stonewall red in most leagues.

From what I’ve seen it appears the refs have been under strict instructions to be way more “let play go on” than any previous cups

I completely missed that Owen Hargreaves was calling the game. I loved that guy back when I watched the game more.

I don’t think that was it. Congo had the perfect setup to play against their midfield and they didn’t have anyone to make runs and stretch the defense.

They’ve made that change and it’s opened up a lot more.
