Seems kind of unfair to the team that wins tomorrow and gets 1 day less rest for the final.

It's already almost over. Let's stretch it out all we can

I feel bad for Croatia (not too bad though) if they win tomorrow. At least 2 matches to pens and a shorter rest.

And no, it's not coming home.

Probably to maximize the TV audience.

Yeah, it's pretty dumb.

As a fan, I'm glad that I get to watch the games over two days instead of one.

As a player or coach, I'd be a little bothered.

Is 3 days of rest insufficient? It would depend on how far they have to travel, if at all.

The third place game is on 2 days of rest for either England or Croatia. That is short rest for sure.

For the World Cup final when your opponent has 4 days of rest? I think it's insufficient.

Wouldnt having less rest in a semi also be unfair?

Not when the two teams playing each other have the same amount of rest. You could also have both games be tomorrow and just give France and Belgium an extra day.

Helps balance out the travel. The team that wins tomorrow does not have to travel since they are already in Moscow where the final is played. The team that wins today in St. Petersburg has to spend some time getting to Moscow ~450 miles away.

OTOH, it really is unfair for the 3rd place game (since the travel situation is reversed), but nobody cares about that game anyway...

I didn't know this. That's actually a fair point.

If that's the case, how come they played the semis on the same day in 1994? Brazil played both the semis and finals at the Rose Bowl while Italy had to travel to California all the way from New Jersey.

Well, that was 24 years ago. Maybe that's when they decided it needed to be changed?

To be clear, a fair point is all that it is. I don't know that this was actually their logic, just that it would make sense.

3 days of rest is more than enough, this isn’t football or rugby.
