I remember watching it on my uncle's satellite dish that looked like a fricking flying saucer in the backyard. was in 5th grade
It was all in Spanish on channels I have never seen before or since.. Got my soccer digest out and filled in the tables they had in the back of the magazine while watching. My cousin and I played hand soccer in the basement. Set up laundry baskets for goals. It was awesome.
No US but I loved every minute of it because I loved soccer.
I guess the point is that soccer here will overcome this setback. MLS is doing well, foreign leagues are at their highest popularity ever hee in the US. If something like this happened, I think it happened in a space and time that will allow it to recover from missing the WC.
Sorry for the rant. A little sad at the outcome tonight.

I was only 20+ days old.....I don’t think it’s a how popular is soccer in the U.S. and will it overcome this question, but more of a how did this happen and for the love of God let’s blow it up so it never happens again.

I was 6 yrs old in Washington Parish and we got 4 TV channels from the antenna....4,6,8 and 12.....we didn't even know what soccer was. We saw like 1-2 LSU football games a year on TV maybe. I wanted to be Tommy Hodson when I grew up.

I'm sure I watched the World Cup Final, which would have been on ABC's Wide World of Sports. I don't remember the 1986 Final.
I DO, however, remember the 1982 final when Italy's "Azurri" won the cup behind the dominating play of Paolo Rossi. I think he had a couple goals. One was a header. One was scored when ABC just HAD to go to commercial. No way they could broadcast for 45 minutes commercial free back then.
It was very exciting and informative. And I completely forgot about soccer until 4 years later when this short guy named Diego Maradona was pretty popular. He scored a goal against England that everyone was talking about...
I didn't really start watching and getting into soccer until 2009/2010.

I'll give away my age. I was watching WC soccer as far back as 1974...when the only way to see it in the US was on closed circuit TV.

I remember going to a soccer stadium in the St Louis metro(ST Louis Soccer Park) to watch the USMNT qualify in CONCACAF in front of record crowds of maybe 4000 in the late 80's.
We have come a long way since those days when nobody in the country cared one way or the other.
It's refreshing having passionate soccer fans to tell me to frick off. At least folks give a shite.

I think the first one I ever saw and remember was 98. So I was eight I guess.
I just remember because some guy on our deer lease kept staying up late/early as shite to watch it.

Glad it stuck. Soccer fans, even Man City, are alright in my book.
