THe first one I really remember watching was 2002 japan/s. Korea. I was in my early 20’s and can remember watching it super early in the am. I still didn’t really follow it though, but that’s the first time I remember thinking “hey, this is a pretty fun sport.”

I would say I really started following the game in the last ten years, with the last 3-4 becoming a real fan outside of just USMNT.

This recent qualifying campaign is the first one I’ve followed from match day 1. And I’m a mess. I’m honestly kind of surprised at how poorly I’m taking this. I can’t sleep I’m so mad. I just got back from a 10 mi rage run.

I remember going to a soccer stadium in the St Louis metro(ST Louis Soccer Park) to watch the USMNT qualify in CONCACAF in front of record crowds of maybe 4000 in the late 80's.

We have come a long way since those days when nobody in the country cared one way or the other.

It's refreshing having passionate soccer fans to tell me to frick off. At least folks give a shite.

For the young ones that need to see how far we've come (and what we can fall back to if we're not careful) this is a USA - England friendly in Los Angeles that I attended in June of 1985. (At the time, I was in the Air Force, stationed 90 miles away at Edwards AFB.)

The commentary before the match really tells the story of what it was like in the US back then. LINK

I'm sure I watched the World Cup Final, which would have been on ABC's Wide World of Sports. I don't remember the 1986 Final. I DO, however, remember the 1982 final when Italy's "Azurri" won the cup behind the dominating play of Paolo Rossi. I think he had a couple goals. One was a header. One was scored when ABC just HAD to go to commercial. No way they could broadcast for 45 minutes commercial free back then. It was very exciting and informative. And I completely forgot about soccer until 4 years later when this short guy named Diego Maradona was pretty popular. He scored a goal against England that everyone was talking about...

I listened to most of Mexico '86 on radio! KGLA "Radio Mil" 1540 am. Then I'd go to Ryan's Irish Pub on Bourbon St. at night to watch whatever replay they had on.

It was the first World Cup I was really into. I watched the final in 1982, and knew some of the Italian and German players, and could talk about them when I visited Italy in 1984.

I was born a few months after the 86 world cup. I remember the 1998 world cup with Ronaldo. But definitely remember waking up early in the summer of 2002 to watch USA games.
