ETA: Comparing MLS to most leagues around the world is quite difficult due to the league's age, setup (drafts and free agency and transfer rules that change on a dime) and calendar (which hurts the league as a whole when it goes up against Mexico in tournaments). It's a real apples and oranges scenario, for lack of a better phrase.

I don't disagree. There's no criteria listed in the OP, either. Are we ranking leagues strictly by the calibre of play, or are we factoring in fan engagement, marketability, growth potential, etc.

Well then, someone would have a hard time convincing me MLS is in the top 30, let alone the top 15.
Purely from an entertainment perspective, all things considered, you could make a case for it being top 10.

I think this board extremely underates the championship. Maybe it's bc the limited tv exposer in America.
But most championship teams are better bc of depth. That league is an absolute grind. Once teams go down its very hard to go back up even when keeping their premier league players.

Yeah, it's one of the most entertaining to me... A lot of that has to do with the fact it's a faster and more athletic league than most.
But I think a lot of people want it to be better than it actually is, and that's fine. It's just going to take a lot of time. Most every league in the world has decades, even a century or more, of a head start.

Interestingly, the IFFHS didn't even have the MLS ranked among the top 40 leagues in the world in their rankings that came out last month.

Those rankings are based on performance in continental and international competitions, and the MLS calendar puts its clubs in a tough spot in the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League.
MLS teams are just starting their seasons when those rounds get underway, while Mexican teams have been playing nonstop for months.
So, if you base it on how a league does against other leagues, MLS is at a double disadvantage because it's in CONCACAF and because it's not setup to succeed in CONCACAF competition.

I have no idea because I'm not going to pretend I watch 30 leagues regularly

What's stopping the MLS from starting their season in early February? They could end the regular season is mid-September when the group stages are underway with the postseason ending in late October.

Or just adopt the regular soccer calander.
The league already plays into November. So it's competing with the NFL. Start the season in late July or early August. Play until about mid November and then take a winter break while the NFL and college football wrap up.

I think the MLS teams could do better in Champions League once they get a few regular season games under their belt.

Of course. Montreal made such a good run recently in the tournament. A move in the calendar would open it up for the rest of the MLS teams in it.

Garber's strategy for improving soccer in this country doesn't make sense. He doesn't want their best players to play overseas yet he refuses to tailor the MLS schedule to the top continental club competition in North America. So how do they expect to get better?

That list puts the Korean league at 22 and the Japanese league at 33, and I'd venture to say that the MLS is between those two.

MLS is below the Korean league? I don't know anything about it but I would think and hope MLS is better.

Well Koreans are probably better on a technical level, and I'd argue that the Japanese are better on a technical level as well. The K-League and J-League began in 1988 and 1993 respectively, and they've put a fair amount of players into top leagues. Saying the MLS is about even with both those leagues is probably accurate, as the MLS has not only improved the USNT, but also the teams of every country in CONCACAF save Mexico.
I do think that the USNT can beat the Koreans and Japanese because we are stronger and faster and arguably deeper. The technical level for those teams is slightly higher, but the US isn't the technical doormat it once was. The problem has been trying to get to that next level.
What I should say is that the MLS is probably even with the Korean and Japanese leagues, and the USNT is probably a little better than both their national teams, depending on who is managing the US. We beat the Koreans the last time we faced them two years ago, and I can't remember the last time we played the Japanese, though I think that would be a good game to compare how far we've come.
