What’s up with our players’ fitness?

First half went well. Pace of the game was very slow and the field didn’t get stretched too much. We completely controlled the game.

Then 10-15 minutes into the second half all of a sudden Weah, Musah, Pulisic, Dest, McKennie (probably due to injury) all looked completely gassed. Like hands on knees, barely moving level tired. How does that happen? Maybe I just didn’t notice because I was annoyed at our shite play, but I didn’t see this issue with Wales.

We can’t afford to be subbing on Acosta/Yedlin/Morris level players in the 65th minute every game. And we’ll have to do a lot more defending against England which takes even more energy. I don’t want to imagine the lineup we roll out against Iran needing 3 points.

Match fitness is a real thing and these guys simply haven’t been playing enough this year. The 5 players you mentioned have a combined 30 league starts this year and they usually don’t go deep anymore with expanded subs

It will sort itself out next Cup but this is what having young guys jockeying for playing time at top clubs looks like

Aren’t several starters coming off injuries too?

Dest, McKennie, and Gio have all been injured. Weah also had an injury until a month or so ago.

Not sure why we looked so gassed though, especially with how much possession we had in the first half.

this is what bothers me. we are absolutely going to have this happen. i understand that fitness is a thing and injury chances increase and long term planning and all that, but substitutes are supposed to make your team better.

it might be tactically, it might be technically, it might be fitness related. but the reason to make substitutions should be to make your team better for the remainder of the game (or maybe the tournament. preventing another yellow card or something).

for probably the entire existence of the USMNT, our substitutes make our team worse.

I am opposite than some. We had the 1-0 lead and needed to max sub to keep energy and lead. Had we won the game that is a huge game 1 result thus alowing you to likely rest players in game 3 and possibly somewhat in game 2.

By not subbing early it cost us the game and now those starters have way less in the tank for games2/3, which cannot be rested in.

Bigger picture is not part of BB thoughts. He was “saving” subs for Fri yet that cost him the game and therefore cost fitness. In group a win in first game allows you to dictate terms in G 2/3. He has no idea how to coach a group stage. We had a massive win and with that all the group momentum. He saved players and threw that advantage away.
