You avoid the other seeded teams. That's about it. There's a chance you get seeded with another unseeded but dangerous European team (say Russia) or a good unseeded team from the other regions.

you dont have to play one of the other top 7 (6 + host which this year is brazil so it matters more) teams in the world in the group stage. it's pretty fricking awesome.

It's based on FIFA rankings which can be flawed by their formula. USA got seeded in 2006 based on our bloated ranking.

The US wasn't seeded in 2006. I believe we were ranked 9th or so. Italy was the one seed in our group

The way the World Cup does seeding for teams 9-32 is dumb as hell. It's all based on regional location. So it's possible for the number 9, 10, and 11 teams in the same bracket if they are from Africa, CONCACAF, and Europe.

We were really close in 2006. If we didn't too so horribly in 1998, we would have been seeded in 2006.

AND be in a four team group with a seeded CONMEBOL team, like Argentina

Terrible

So much of how well a team does in a World Cup is determined by the draw.

I'm actually okay with this. You shouldn't have to play another team in your confederation in the group stage. Maybe factor in seeding a little bit, but I like the idea of mixing confederations as much as possible.

Man a Switzerland, burkina Faso, and an Asian team that isn't Japan would be the best draw of all time

Not sure about that, and you would have to be seeded to get a draw like that.

Yeah, the CONCACAF and Asian teams are put in the same pot, so are best case scenario group would be the Swiss, Burkina Faso, and another European side like Greece (Iceland, if we want to go with remote possibilites).

Ahh didn't realize we were in the same pot as Asia. But switzerland is seeded and we're the highest ranked side in Concacaf/Asia so getting Burkina Faso wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

switzerland, us, burkina Faso, and then like a Greece, Ukraine, Romania, Iceland, Bosnia, or even Ecuador would be ideal
