Weston Mckinnie Discussion Thread

Alright boys. Is it fair for me to say that I've never truly been impressed with Weston Mckinnie?
Don't get me wrong, it is great that he is consistently in the Schalke side and I admire his work ethic but technically there is a lot to be desired. I know this is the first game in months and everyone is rusty but man his passing can be hard to watch sometimes.
Anyways I know he is a crucial piece for the USMNT. Do yall think he will ever move to play at a higher level than at Schalke? He screams lower mid table EPL player.

I have a hard time finding the position that he's supposed to be really good at. He's just really inconsistent.

For sure. I understand that the performance of unbelievable young players like Gio and Pulisic kind of skews the way we look and judge others sometimes. I think he's gonna end up at a Crystal Palace or Brighton level club in the future.
He's only 21 so definitely a ton of improvement to be had. I've never really seen him take control of a game.

I think he can have a job in a good team, but I dont think he will ever be good enough on the ball to be a playmaker like Schalke need him to be

He’s had a few nice games for the national team (and he’s young), but I’ve kind of thought the same. His touch is a little consistently loose for a central midfielder. The passing is just inconsistent - he’s capable of really nice balls and then he’s capable of really wayward passes.
Seems like the latter is sometimes a focus problem, and something he could improve on as he gets more and more experience. But I don’t think he has a great first touch.
I guess he’s best as a box to box cm. Would be nice if he was a little better on the ball.

Why would he leave Schalke for shite clubs like that?

Quintessential Jack-of-all-trades player. You can slot him in almost anywhere and know he will do ok.

He's just fine. He's not bad when I watch him. But he also doesn't get super involved in the game. I'd prefer him as a squad player.

schalke are a mess, he might regressing because of it.
Their standing in table is because of so many mediocre German teams behind them. It's not because of their play.
Wagner has a lot of work top do, to get them to where they should be. They came into season expecting to fight for European spots

I'm just saying I think that is gonna be the highest level he plays at outside of Schalke that is

He has done pretty well I think. They just don't have the talent they once did cause they let everyone leave on free transfers. They are gonna have to slowly build up again and rely on their academy.

Wagner is extremely over rated as a manager by tons of Americans

ive never been sold on him. I think he lacks a certain quickness too. I do like his attitude, and how he plays the game, but I just don’t think he’s one of the more gifted young players. I do think he will have a lasting role with the USMNT, but I don’t ever expect him to be a game changer.
He did do a pretty nice job of breaking up a lot of passes in the middle of the park today, but their team is just terrible so it didn’t really matter.

If he ends up as a Kyle Beckerman type for the US, where you can put him in the midfield and trust he won't turn it over or give up goals, that'll be a great role for him.

His technique is ok. His work rate, tackling, winning challenges in midfield, and heading are his strengths. I thought McKennie was fine today. Had some good clearances and snuffed out dangerous breaks. Schalke as a whole looked poor though.

Is this supposed to be a knock? That would make him one of the most successful American players in history.

Pulisic has spoiled our expectations for the American abroad lol

That’s a good comparison. I could see him being that kind of player for the USMNT.

Which is wild bc his spot in the squad has always been at threat at his two clubs
