I'm an ex ref. Not professionally, but club and HS. I agree with everyone on here saying it was offside.

honestly, the flag should’ve went up as soon as he started running with the ball, he was a few yards offsides.

This is how I saw it as well. Have seen the flag go up for similar runs all the time. Clear offsides IMO.

Edit: the original call should have stood. No clue how it got overturned.

I agree. They've gone too far with the "let it play on and sort it out later/put your flag up after the play has finished".

I get it on close ones, but he was well off.

If this call didn’t stand to benefit United I would 100% be saying it was a bull shite call, but it benefits us so excellent call ref!!

They couldn’t “make a play” on the ball because it was under Rashford’s feet, between his legs. No whistle. No flag. The custom since VAR is to play it through and sort it out after. Why risk a penalty by sticking your foot in and possibly tripping him in the box? You don’t commit a penalty because you think the guy is offsides.

With this reasoning every defender on the pitch was obstructed.

Like I said Akanji was running diagonal away from the ball and Walker was the opposite side of Fernandez, who he would have had to go thru to get the ball.

Goalies constantly have offside attackers in their box and are never given that call.

ETA: if Akanji would have made the slightest attempt on the ball I'd would 100% say offsides. But he has got to be physically obstructed not mentally distracted by what he considers should be called.

I’m currently certified, including doing semi-professional matches, and it’s the correct decision under the current interpretation.

The concept of “interfering” is a high bar to clear and gets harder and harder to clear as the skill level of the players advances. In a youth game, this is probably called offside and nobody argues either way. At this level, every benefit is given to the attacking team.

I referee a youth game VERY differently that I officiate a semi-professional match.

From a PRO referee that I have worked with in the past-

This is the perfect example of "KEEP PLAYING!" for defenders. Had Akanji kept running hard and made a play, we'd have a MUCH STRONGER argument for Interfering with an Opponent.
As it stands, we have a deliberate action and it's near the ball. But arguably (for this level of play) NOT sufficiently "near the opponent". I think this could've gone either way, and I think at a level of play that most of us are dealing with we would expect this to be called as "interfering with an opponent". But at this level of play, I appreciate why it's "grayer", and certainly the default with offside is "if it's ambiguous, don't call it". Good patience by the AR.

How can you honestly say it’s ambiguous? I think that’s what is so bothersome. ITS SO frickING OBVIOUS.

Alright pipe down. Controversial call sure, but going as far as saying it’s so obvious that Rashford is interfering is just wrong. No evidence from the way the players are running / positioned that the play would’ve been any different had rashford not been there.

That’s what I thought as well. You play till the whistle and not presume. Hate it when defenders throw up their arm playing sideline ref.

Liverpool look absolutely dreadful. Feel like we’ve had the ball in Brighton’s half for maybe 2 minutes all half. There is no way this squad is finishing top 4
