We can need to Portugal chase us, especially in Manaus. We cannot play like we did tonight to get a result. I said the other day we needed to put Ghana's defense on their heels with an early goal, just not 29 seconds in. Since we do not have Altidore we are gonna need to a be a little bit more creative to wear down their defense, and the best way to do that is have them chase the ball. Fabian Johnson will need to pick his spots to get forward, and Bradley needs to control the ball better than he did tonight.

I'm hoping we see Zusi start Sunday, whether it be on the opposite side of the field as Bedoya or in place of Bedoya, but we need his passing ability if we want to keep possession.

We both know we probably won't esp bc their players are much better on the ball. Portugal is set up to run. We need to counterattack the frick out of them and play a highline keep constant pressure forcing them to make mistakes and then finish what chances we get.

i don't know if I want him on the right side, especially with CR7 running at him. his work may be great, but i think we need bedoya's athleticism.

we just are not set up to be a possession team (not without Altidore and his hold up ability). We've wanted to see it for years, but it's just not an American style yet.

We do however have to be better at it than we were today. For large stretches of the game, we couldn't string together three passes (Bradley's nightmare was so evident because of this). Being able to sustain some possession as opposed to always facing a barrage of pressure will be key.

Pretty much just don't have technical enough players yet.

We could barely pass back to our defenders bc we couldn't even feed out to the wings. Need a better performance next match for sure

As long as we beat Portugal on Sunday & Germany beats Ghana on Saturday, we advance to knockout correct?

Meh I don't necessarily agree. Portugal is the desperate team so naturally they will keep possession and taking some risks, need to exploit it when they do. Gotta be sound defensive and efficient when in possession of the ball. Didn't watch their game against Germany so I don't know what glaring weaknesses they have that need to be taken advantage of

Keeping possession is a result of good play, not something we can just game plan to do

i agree. "bob ball" will work against portugal. we only need a tie and we're all but set to advance (unless ghana shocks the world)

when jozy got hurt, i wish we had subbed in mix to add a MF instead of a forward. bunkering with that formation was fricktarded

There is no point in entertaining this idea. We do not have the quality to maintain possession, especially without Jozy (who is among our best at keeping possession).

"Possession" as a buzzword is extremely overrated and overused by the modern-day soccer fan.

agreed

but at least being able to keep meaningful possession is important, and we really struggled to do that yesterday

we don't have to be Spain and be able to suffocate a team with the ball but we do have to be able to keep it long enough to relieve some pressure on ourselves

"Meaningful Possession" is a much better talking point, I agree. Keeping the ball is fine, but it's really not the end all be all.

You can have 60% possession and look like shite or you can have 60% possession and absolutely demolish someone. I think it's kind of the difference between Bayern from Jupp's last year and Pep's first year.

Yes, if this happens, both us and Germany would be guaranteed to advance. The only question would be first or second place, which would be decided when we play Germany.

A tie with Portugal would be good too, and would give us a great chance to advance as the second place team, if we have a better goal difference in the end. Bottom line though, we need at least a point from this. Lose and it's out of our hands.

I'd rather we be clinical with our chances. We are going to get some. I don't care if we punt and run all game.
