Was there ever a happier moment as a USA fan than WC game 1 in 2002

More specifically.... the moment going up 3-0 on Portugal in the opening game. Not many remember, Portugal was a favorite to WIN the whole thing, we were supposed to go down to the tune of 5 to zip. We'd give up 2 and hold on to the win, but for those few minutes... it was like, bring on Brazil, bring on France, bring on anyone bitches!!!
I was happy beating Mexico, but I always knew we could and that was a winnable game. Beating Spain was great and Donovan's last gasp goal was exciting but it was a shame the game came down to that.
I vividly remember being out of my mind that day. No one saw that coming... more Louisville and Utah fans saw their Sugar Bowl victories coming than US Soccer fans that day.

I didn't follow US Soccer very close prior to 2002. That was the World Cup that got me hooked on the international game. I knew we were supposed to lose, and that Luis Figo was supposed to score 4 goals against us. But I don't think I understood just how big of an upset that it was at the time.
EDIT: But to answer your question, one specific moment comes to mind: half-time in the 2009 Confederations Cup final. I won't go any further into it than that.

At the time, the first 36 minutes of the USA/Portugal game was the most shocking thing in a World Cup that had already seen Senegal beat the defending World Cup, European Cup, and Confederations Cup champion.

The most amazing thing to happen in US Soccer history that ultimately ended in disappointment.
And I am still bitter that CD9 had to be a dumbass and ruin his career.

I remember watching that game in the middle of the night and running to wake up my dad every time the US scored.

I was 14 and I remember my dad waking me up each night to watch our games. I remember being so disappointed at how we played in '98. We were fully expecting a loss and just praying for a draw. We were playing the tournament favorites and they were in their golden generation. Going up 3-0 was pure ecstasy. I actually watched the highlights a week ago and had the same feeling.

I was in the LSU student union for the conclusion of the Algeria game. I got there around the 80th minute as I sprinted from a Spanish test.
The whole union was watching and the place just erupted with the goal. Wish the security camera footage from that day was around.
