Poch is homie.

I was Musah’s biggest fan when he came in. He is arse now though unfortunately

Must have auto-corrected from “player pool”…

Half-kidding, but for real… our depth is an entire bag of smashed arse.

Probably so, but unfortunately so is Musah right now.

He's only still in top Euro league right now because of his youth potential and his European passport.

If you plopped him in MLS in his current form, he'd probably be putting up Roldan numbers (one of the better midfielders in the league) and if you put Roldan on Atalanta right now he'd probably be putting up Musah numbers (locked to the bench).

We're fricked regardless if Adams gets hurt, so I can't really get up in arms over Poch calling in a depth piece that has actually performed ok for him in a USMNT shirt than one who has been non-existent in one.

...and yes, it pisses me off that Musah has become non-existent in a USMNT shirt.

Yup.

One thing that I think really backfired on us was Poch not really calling up "the establishment" guys since coming on in favor of trying to create depth and competition by expanding the player pool.

After all that, our roster is still basically all the usual suspects and now we're entering a home World Cup where the roster doesn't have much experience playing with Poch. Berhalter, Arfsten, Freeman and Freese are really the only guys who benefitted in all this.

All of this. Plus Roldan has performed better with his USMNT opportunities this cycle. As much as I love Musah and disappointed in his decline, Roldan is the correct pick.

How do people compare this roster vs the 2022 roster

Strikers: 2026 strikers are much improved over Josh Sargent, Turkish Haji, and MLS Jesus. That was truly a dreadful group. At least our 2026 trio have all been scoring domestically with some consistency in the last year.

Attacking Mids: 2026 pulisic and weah are better than the 2022 versions, so I think we are better than 2022.

Mids: I honestly don’t remember where Tyler Adams was in his health/form in 2022. 2026 mckennie is better than 2022 mckennie.

Wingbacks: 2026 Jedi and Dest and better than 2022

CD: 2022 feels better than this.

Goal Keepers: I don’t have an opinion on flavors of manure.

Agreed. I think Balogun can have a really special World Cup if he gets somewhat decent service... unfortunately that's been an issue that has constantly plagued this generation.

I would say it's a push in terms of overall talent, other than Tillman, it's basically the same guys who haven't really improved from 2022 to now, in the case of Reyna, he's regressed and Weah is playing but as a RWB. I will say that the 3-4-2-1 plays to this group's strengths more than Gregg's 4-3-3.

Adams was basically in the same spot that he's in now, spent the whole cycle battling injuries but the timing worked where he played every minute of 2022. Agreed on McKennie.

Jedi leveled up right after the 2022 World Cup, I think Dest is the same player, which is fine, he was our best player in Qatar. The problem is both are coming off of a season where they haven't played much due rehab from serious injuries. With Dest, we at least have pretty good cover for him with Weah. We better hope Jedi turns the clock back to 2022 and never runs out of energy despite playing every minute because Arfsten tracking back defensively scares the shite out of me.

I think the group we brought in this year has a lot more overall talent and upside than 2022 which included the likes of Walker Zimmerman and Aaron Long. Ream presents a calmness on the ball and always seems to make the right pass, a quality that hardly any player in our pool possesses, but he's cooked defensively. If we're going with the 3-back set up, I think our best defensive setup without dropping off too much from a passing standpoint is Freeman-Healthy Richards-McKenzie. If Richards is a step slow though because of the ankle then we are fricked because...

Appreciate the response. I am pretty out of the loop in following the USMNT this cycle.

Per earlier responses, it seems we are again pretty thin on quality on the bench.

Is there any Deandre yedlins candidates that could see an absolute springboard from this tournament?

Trotting out so many of the same guys without any of them being demonstrably better this cycle is . . . less fun than I would hope.

Really the only ones I can think of are Seb Berhalter and Alex Freeman, who have both already made huge jumps in the last year for both club and country. Freeman has already parlayed that into a move to Villarreal while Berhalter could likely make a move this summer if he features and performs well off the bench. He has shown to be one of our best set piece takers on the roster and has shown to have an edge to him.

Maybe Matt Freese if he channels the ghosts of USMNT goalkeepers past and stands on his head, but I don't have much faith in that.

ETA: I'll add Arfsten even though I shite on his defensive capabilities in the last post. He has been pretty fun to watch on the attacking end.

Roldan has been good but Musah CAN give you special moments. Roldan is who he is.

If Adams goes down and we need a spark I have more faith in Musah to deliver with his youth.

Doesn’t matter anyway, Musah isn’t even in the discussion which is wild to me.

I don’t want to come off wrong here, but I think it is a simple matter of floor between the two.

At minimum, Roldan will be in good spots. He’s good at that (and not much else really).

Musah has been run off the ball entirely for club and country for a good while now.

Both are good players to have if you want to lose a WC. We’d be hoping for miracles either way, imo.
