Regardless of style, the overall state of our national goal keepers is astonishingly bad.
I don’t understand how we aren’t consistently pumping out quality keepers and strikers. Our top tier athletes fit those 2 positions extremely well.

Regardless, you can’t have a guy as bad as Turner on the ball back there and not expect other teams to press the frick out of you.
It sucks not being able to play with your feet these days but........Kasey Keller was a world class shot stopper with TERRIBLE feet. I'd bite your hand off for that right now.

Because the type of athlete available to us isn't the problem.
Our coaching/development is the problem.

This is a non-starter for football at the highest level, and none of us here would argue that.
Gianluigi Donnarumma is a good argument for this.
I would easily take a work class shot stopper that has two left feet over what the US currently has.

but I am not trying to have a spaz that doesn’t know when to clear it and is visually nervous passing under even light pressure back there.
This describes Freeze to the T.
I am having trouble understanding if you want Freeze as our starter or are saying Freeze shouldn’t even be on rooster.

Pepi went out of the game today early in the first half on a non contact injury. Idk what it was and haven’t seen video. Damion Downs replaced him on the roster which is kind of puzzling since he doesn’t have a goal in like three years.

Maybe when compared to other keeper. Turner is inarguably worse in this facet.

He should be the starter until we find someone better. Our first two behind him are visibly worse (Turner and Brady, if the WC roster is to be trusted… My eyes tell me differently).
Freese had one really bad frick up when we were scrambling for any hope we could muster, and folks act like he has a track record of that type of thing with the national team.
I REALLY hope one of the young call-ups can show some sort of potential and command during this window, but I know that is not a realistic expectation.

Are we just forgetting the Freese kicked the grass before he kicked the ball against Belgium?
Seriously, what is Freese good at to where he deserves to be the #1 starter?
What did he do to earn that trust from Poch? He was a mediocre keeper in MLS last year and looked uncomfortable as frick in every single one of his USMNT appearances.

Case in point.
To be fair to him, I don’t think he won it as much as Turner lost it.

Freese has had more than one frick up though.
Please tell me what he is good at.

With the national team?
What he is decent at:
- Passing from his position to the back line
- Clearing the ball in dangerous situations
- Average as a shot stopper
What is Turner good at aside from shot stopping, since you want to make itemized lists?
I understand that shot stopping is obviously what you should be best at as a keeper. Football has changed since even Tim Howard was in goal, and there is more to the position than simply shot stopping.
To be completely honest, I would bet my paycheck that in 100 simulated pressure situations, Turner would give up a goals and possessions to the opposition at a 3-to-1 ration minimum.
It’s been nice watching the USMNT play (Belgium match not included) and not having an anxiety attack when the ball is played back to the keeper in an effort to build from the back.

But that's kinda been the problem. Freese did it against Bosnia too, Bosnia just sucks and couldn't capitalize on his bad passing.
Of their World Cup matches (Turner 5, Freese 4), who do you think has the better passing metrics?
Again, I hate that you are making me defend Turner, because I don't want him as the keeper either, it's just that it seems like Poch has gaslighted people into thinking Freese is competent on the ball simply because he's not Turner, when he just isn't.
Both are trash with their feet.

So he did it twice? Look, I’m not calling Freese the Portero Messi on the ball. I just know what my anxiety level is when I watch him pass and handle the ball vs. when Turner does the same.
I can’t tell you how many times I saw Turner spaz out and shank a clearance in our own half, make a pass to another CB that created more pressure, or give up a goal due to his terrible first touch and shaky feet.
By and large, when Freese is under pressure he is at least quick on a decision and either makes a pass or boots it up/out wayyyy upfield.
I legit feel that the recency bias on Freese’s error in the Belgium match is alive and well. I don’t like seeing my keep do something like he did, either. That mistake is easier for me to put off than repeated and constant inability.
I’d rather have a higher floor (passing and decision making) and average ceiling (shot stopping) than a low floor for passing/decisions and high ceiling for shot stopping.
We don’t have the defensive prowess to give up anything in the back that we don’t need to, especially extra chances and possessions.
ETA: If our back line was better, I’d possibly be on the Turner train. I just don’t forget things easily when it comes to turnovers in our own half and extra chances/goals.

So he did it twice?
I'm not going to list every bad pass that Freese has made for club and country, but it's way more than twice.
He had some questionable distribution in the Gold Cup as well.
My point, for the umpteenth time, is that he's just as bad as Turner with his feet.

Maybe for some, I've been not liking him since before he ever got his first USMNT call up.
He's an at-best average MLS keeper that Poch really likes. He's what Shaq Moore was to Gregg, but at an even more important position.

JFC you two, get a room.
They both are mid. I don’t trust either with their feet. Turner is the better shot stopper. I’m not going to get worked up over which meh keeper gets called up for friendlies.

Then why put me through the trouble of a list of specific critiques if you aren’t going to go through a similar trouble? Every keeper gets pressured, and they have to boot it out at times. Not every keeper shots down both legs and has visible nervous energy in a tight situation.
I’ve literally watched Turner, on more than one occasion, get caught between two minds and his body does neither of them. It happened multiple times in his European stint, it happened with the USMNT several times, and for his club as well.
Freese has had that happen this year, but before then it wasn’t something we had seen from him a ton.

That’s an opinion. And not a well-informed one.

Because it's a message board on an LSU forum, I'm tired of banging my banging my head against the wall and just wanna go home.
Believe what you want big dawg, this is tiring.
