I thought Jamie Guin and an existing team owber were funding it? Maybe not Jamie, but the other guy.

I don’t think it makes sense to pretend moving their franchises to D1 means anything. The gulf is massive and stingy owners in small markets aren’t a threat to MLS

They will however serve their purpose in getting the MLS to get their shite together on basic things (e.g. TV access), so it’s a win for all. If MLS is threatened or see something working for USL, they’ll do what needs to be done

If nothing else, the USL’s growth does wonders for the youth game in those markets and if we get these franchises stabilized, we could actually start to dream of a pro/rel world

It only (potentially) works if they institute pro/rel immediately
I don’t see the logic in this assertion. People aren’t watching an inferior product over MLS just because it has pro/rel

If they want to have any prayer in closing the drastic talent gap they have to give owners incentive to drop big coin. That is mutually exclusive with pro/rel

20 of the USL’s 24 clubs have founding years that start with “201x”. When they’re stable organizations and fixtures in their community and span longer than 1 generation of fans, then we can start the pro/rel talk

I think the huge difference is lots of USL franchises have more a club feel than the soulless MLS.

USL has more grassroots feel to it

A lot of good that will do if their teams line up across from MLS

MLS pulling most teams out of US Open Cup shows MLS is scared. Trying to limit the damage

Because you can actually watch the games. MLS signed their death sentence with this AppleTV deal.

I think it’s interesting that they are putting more teams in markets to compete with the MLS and MLS Next Pro.
Dallas is getting one in 2027, soon after the World Cup.
They will also build a new stadium (I don’t know where)

Edit: looks like they’re trying to put it in Garland. I’m kinda surprised because that’s not far from the FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco.

paywall subscription service is such a pain in the arse.

What do you think Paramount+ (EPL) and ESPN are, free?

But the MLS as a brand has a 30 year head start, is entrenched in the Top 30 markets, and has far superior financial backing

There is a difference between the best leagues putting some of their matches on streaming platform when the rest are on traditional tv part of a basic package. To a sub standard league putting 95% of its matches behind a paywall that takes extra hoops to subscribe too. Not to mention most the matches come on at the same time.

The issue is that MLS is a paywall within a paywall.

This. Plus Peacock actually makes the EPL more accessible to Americans, even more accessible to Americans than it is to English, than without it. The MLS went from pretty accessible to almost exclusively behind a paywall.

I'm pretty impressed with USL facilities and fanbase. Most games I see have pretty good crowds. I love the suburban/neighborhood feel some of these stadiums are in. Feels like a real club.
