So can anyone tell me what the hell Jones did? I was at the game and no one had any clue.

After Valencia kicked out on Bedoya, there was a large group of players arguing. Jones stuck his hand out and it hit a player from Ecuador. Apparently the new rule is that any face contact is an instant red. Honestly, I think it was inadvertent contact, and while the rule was applied correctly, any absolute rule like this is a joke.

It was a yellow at most, if not for that rule.

In the stadium it looked like a phantom red and no one knew what the hell Jones did. Thanks for the clarification.

His closed fist hit an Equador player in the chin. May have been an accident but it still looked like a punch.

Hit is a very very strong term. It's the right application of a stupid rule. Any touch on the face in a scrum is supposed to be a red card. Ridiculous. Closed fist or not Jones barely grazed him. In a sane world thats a yellow card

Yea. He closed his fist and there was pushing and shoving and his hand grazed a chin. The guy's head didn't even move. It's one of those rules that is pretty silly. Guys can shove the shite out of each other, but if you even breathe on someone's face...you gone

Nah, he closed his fist. It was nothing really, barely touched him, but you can't close your fist to another players face. I forget how it was worded. But red card to players not involved in the play that touch a players face.

Bradley, I think, shoves another player kind of as it's happening also. Doing that may have been why Jone's hand moved to the players face. I'd have to watch it again.

This rule though is probably trying to keep what happened from happening. It's a foul, ref was going to deal with it, instead players want to huddle around and push each other. And guys like Jones like getting in the middle of that stuff.

Apparently Brooks shoved a guy and we are lucky he didn't get a yellow. If we were missing him in addition to the other three, we would be in a world of hurt.

I like it that USMNT has fight in them, but my goodness they are getting dumb red cards.

Jones especially. Weak as shite card but he should know better. His absence really, really hurts, as we looked poor defensively after he got sent off.

We just went from a man up to weaker in a drop of a second. Shite, I knew that was going to give Ecuador that new ray of hope and fortunately we held on.

That's where the line has been for a long time, though. Throw something that even remotely looks like a punch or a slap to the face, and you're probably getting sent off if the ref sees it. It's not a surprise.

Which is fine. It's one of the very few lines that you're absolutely not supposed to cross. I don't really have a problem with it. I'd rather get angry at the incredibly experienced, 34 yo player who fails to understand this.

Bradley's red card at the end of that semifinal was the most bullshite thing I've seen happen to the US, with the exception of the disallowed goal against Slovenia in the 2010 World Cup.

Despite this, I'm pumped the USMNT has made it this far. 3 wins. Awesome.

Oh I'm definitely excited about it, and props to Jurgen for putting together a more coherent game plan than we've seen in the past. Really wish we had jones for the next game. Like someone else said, a 34 year old vet should know better. He's always been hot headed though. Just who he is.

My son was reading his lips. Apparently, the word "puto" was tossed at the ref.

That HS Spanish is paying off.

It's still a dumb black and white rule. Not to mention when compared to later in the game the Ecuadorian player came flying in with a high boot to someone's face and got a yellow.

I don't really think it is. I don't think it's an area where the referee needs to use discretion. There are plenty of gray areas in soccer already. Even the biggest psychopaths in soccer can avoid doing this on a regular basis.

It's a weird circumstance. It didn't even look like Jones meant to make contact with his face. It just happened and barely happened. Unfortunate.
