Biggest takeaway is that we made wholesale changes and still were the better and more intentional side in both halves against a team that's only loss in the last year is still being disputed

Even if it was a friendly, needed a result for confidence purposes, especially after how the last window went.

We better not play out of the back though when shite matters.

A lot closer to winning 5-1 than drawing or losing, so overall I think very promising performance.

Biggest concerns are feeling like the backline has 3-4 bad giveaways a game that result in chances and then whenever the counter press gets broken feels like we have no one in the back line who can consistently clean things up.

I got “Homie” and “my guy” in one thread. Are you trying these new ones out for the WC?

Four takeaways so far:

Having Dest back is a difference maker

Ream cannot start. Captain or not he's just a step too slow now

We may actually have some depth finally (at a couple spots anyway)

CP just got that monkey of his back so that can only be good for his confidence heading into the tourney.

I'll call you G(gg) going forward if that works.

There’s no one in the back line who can consistently play a line breaking pass other than Ream. Damned if you do damned if you don’t. He could be exposed athletically but the other guys can be exposed with bad giveaways and being sloppy with the ball.

I think Paraguay and Australia you could start Ream based on expected game state

This is the problem, people think Richards fixes that when his passing is the worst part of his game.

Our offensive movement is light years better than under Greg.

Our possesion, particularly by the back 3 is abysmal. So many giveaways.

Clean that up and we may be dangerous.

Biggest thing - guys were working hard and seemed to be having fun. Could have scored a couple of more. Concern - pretty much every defender had a few bad passes or giveaways.

I just hope the intention we played with in the final third today is the norm going forward now that the roster is finalized and everyone is solely focusing on the USMNT for this next month and a half, because it really hasn't been the case with Poch outside of a couple of matches here and there.

This generation has been arse in the attack whether it's been Gregg or Poch.

The trade off with Gregg was that our defense was really good under him (shite ton of 0-0 and 1-1 draws in his tenure). Not sure if it's players or style of play or both, but our backline has been consistently tragic under Poch.

Gregg just consistently put 9 guys behind the ball against anyone with a pulse and tried to hope for a miracle counter or set piece.

Poch is asking the team to do way more tactically which results in more breakdowns and miscommunications when it goes poorly.

Essentially has a higher ceiling but lower floor. Have to hope that this game is a sign that things have been building properly and the team is rounding into shape tactically at the right time.

This means nothing if he's constantly getting beat defensively and giving up goal chances. We aren't going to win shootouts against the top teams

What chances did he give up today because of his lack of pace?

Sure, but under Gregg, we also (stupidly) opted to play out of the back but had nowhere near the amount of "when playing it out of the back goes wrong" clips that we've had under Poch.

Idk if it's a career top 5 league club coach in Poch giving too much information to his backline in such short international windows and they short circuit or what, but it's been consistently fricking awful anytime we play out the back.

He was beat a couple times today and had a really bad turnover.

I love Ream. He's one of my all time faves, but it's passed him by.

To be fair, this can be said about pretty much everyone that we deployed on the backline today

I just think it was a much more conservative “play out of the back” approach under Gregg. You had more midfielders and even attackers close by as options and the passing schemes were designed more to avoid risk than actually create offensive opportunities.

Poch puts them much more on island and the passing schemes are designed to invite risk but if you execute successfully you can break out and actually have a threat in attack.

I'm just not sure those intricacies are conducive to success in international play, unless you can guarantee that your attack bags 2+ goals a match.
