Lesotho would be bankrupted by a trip to San Marino or Vatican City

or Germany...

If looking at this from a Pro-USA perspective, were better off with 32 teams. 50% chance of coming out of the group instead of 40%. Ya you can assume that we will get matched up with at least on of the 33-40 teams, but I can recall a group made up of Slovenia and Algeria that we struggled with. Any team in the tourny will turn up and play because it is the chance of a lifetime.

I believe in us this time around to handle lesser competition, but who knows for future world cups

i just see no reason to do this. if the tournament goes to 40, is there a point to qualifying? arent the extra 8 (from 32 to 40) about the number of teams that are legitimately good enough for the world cup, but dont make it? that's the cool part about qualifying and shite to me. you actually have a chance to not make the world cup with how it sits now at 32 (mexico, portugal, etc...)

I've revised my initial opinion. The SB has convinced me that the WC is too watered down. There are only 4 to 6 teams that have a legitimate chance of winning the world cup; therefore, FIFA should retract the number of qualifying teams to six. One table format, round robin, standard football scoring.

Tie Breakers

1. Points
2. Goal Difference
3. Card Accumulation

You must be in favor of the NCAA Mens basketball tournament going to 128 teams too?

Why not just make it the capital one cup type format? We could draw Germany next or Guadaloupe. Who knows?

Did you not see my last post? You've convinced me already. Why on earth would we allow teams like USA and Panama in, they have literally 0% chance of winning the tournament.

Reduce the WC to six elite squads. Obviously, the qualifying will need to be reworked. Maybe South America and North America can have a combined process. Top two from the Americas, Top three from Europe, and one from "rest of world."

May as well. There's already too many teams in the tournament that don't belong.

I think 32 is the right number, going to 40 and you begin to water down the competition and as has been said earlier, it devalues an upset and favors the stronger teams.

I would not be opposed to re-organizing the allocation though. CONCACAF would be just fine with 3 bids, give the .5 to Africa and pair them with Oceana.

Ok, so how do you reduce it from 40?

the only way to go is to 32 - and then what, only 8 teams don't make the knockout round? Stupid.

Or do you try and reduce it from 40 to 16? so some second place group teams don't make it? Or 40 down to 20 (top two of each group), with the top 4 group winners getting a bye? So you get rewarded for having an easy group, which is alrdady its own reward?

Its just ridiculous. 32 divides easily into the 16 required for an even knock-out round. Top two of each group.

The rumor being thrown around up here is that there will be two group stages.
