I am a much bigger fan of international tournaments than club soccer.

The world cup is my second favorite sporting event to March madness. But, I’ve tried to watch club soccer and could never get into it; I’m not sure why.

I’m thoroughly enjoying this euro cup as well.

They nailed it with how they expanded the field properly
The average group stage match quality the last two tourneys is down considerably from the 16 team field.

We didn't even get a Group of Death (Group F) because they all advanced.

The R16 on is fine, but the quality of play has not improved. Just dilution getting more teams in.

What do people think about the confederations cup being cancelled for a club world cup?

The Confed Cup could be a fun tournament, and arguably it had some of the best USMNT performances of all time, but overall it was a pretty small-time tourney. The FIFA CWC is also relatively small, and honestly, given the amount of games senior teams play, I can see arguments for scuttling it as well.

From my perspective, the group stage of the Euro is perhaps more entertaining and higher quality than the group stage of the World Cup because UEFA is the deepest confederation and almost all the teams have a certain level of competency and quality. At the very least, most teams are going to trot out 3-4 players from really good teams in one of the top four leagues, and almost all of them know how to defend reasonably well.

By contrast, the World Cup usually produces some pretty big mismatches in the group stage, pitting some hapless team from a weak confederation against one of the powerhouses from Europe or South America.

Different story in the late stages of the World Cup, when you typically get the best South American teams going up against the best European teams. That’s when the World Cup gets really good, in my opinion.

We have been in a couple of the tournaments

Wish we could play in it every time and not the gold cup

That would be awesome. I wish Conmebol and Concacaf could work out a deal to just have both confederations compete for the Copa America. The Gold Cup sucks. Try the Pan-American championship again but just continue calling it copa america.

They should just like all the island nations have their own thing, and have Canada, USA, Mexico, and Central America combine with CONMEBOL. With the exception of Cuba and Jamaica, they could join too.

I think this is pretty reasonable and close to where I'm at. Every World Cup and Euros has strong and weak groups, but I do agree you'll probably get a few more mismatches in the group stages at the World Cup (though I think that is negated quite a bit by the fact that three teams get out of most groups in the current format).

The knockout stage is where I see a clear edge in difficulty for the World Cup (especially in the 16 team format).
