3-1 is tough thanks to that ridiculous start to the second half but we are definitely the better team. Nobody is scared of playing a bunch of pussies in the Bernabeu.

Player for player? Sure. But Madrid clearly had the better tactics. Setting aside the fluky third goal, they created the first two by using Vini and Valverde to stretch Chelsea's back three on quick attacks and counters, which isolated Benzema on Silva, which is a mismatch (would be for almost any defender).

Tuchel recognized and changed shape to a back four midway through the second half, which allowed Chelsea to keep the wingbacks further back with the two center backs covering Benzema. This helped but it was too late, as Chelsea does not produce enough goals to pull even against a Madrid team that simply packed and flopped their way to a two-goal margin.

Sorry, but Tuchel got seriously out-classed in this one, which is saying something because Ancelotti kinda sucks and is literally coaching for his job right now. Madrid is well suited to exploit Chelsea's three-at-the-back system, which is just not the same without two wingbacks who can get up and down the pitch.

Yes they had a nice 3 minute stretch, the other 87 minutes we largely controlled the game and created significantly more chances.

CSB on your tactical explanation but AC was the problem.

Chelsea created more shots, but only put 5 on target -- same number as Madrid. Possession was closer to even before the third goal -- after that Madrid packed it in.

IMO Chelsea has a serious problem without James AND Chilwell on the pitch, and Madrid is built to stretch teams high and wide. Not surprising that they got a few quick goals and then packed it in.

You always blame the players when the manager doesn't set them up to succeed. Asking Christensen to mark Vini Jr until James can get back to help out is just bad tactics.

TT needs to go 4-3-3 in the second leg and use James to neutralize Vini. But this won't be enough because Chelsea can't fricking score .

Lukaku had the best chances. I’d probably start him or bring him in way earlier.

Tactics are so overblown in matches like this. The game could easily have been 3-1 Chelsea and everybody is blowing Tuchel. The difference is one team has a striker in great form and the other doesn't. The third obviously is a total outlier.

Bayern played exactly like they did against RB Salzburg in the 1st leg, but didn’t get the undeserved equalizer they did then.

Bottom line if you can’t win by two goals at home in the CL quarterfinals, you don’t belong.

We’ll see what happens on Tuesday.

Everton lose,

Just checked their wiki page.

They’ve only been in the second division for 4 total seasons since their founding in the 1880s

That includes 3 straight in the early 50s.

I kept thinking they would eventually pull away but they just can’t do it.

According to you, Chelsea had the better team. And yet, Real Madrid won by two goals. You say the difference is 100% attributable to a striker in great form, but how did they get that striker the ball in scoring position when they have such an inferior team?

Answer: Tactics.

Sorry, but your ideas aren't even internally consistent. You don't really seem to get football on a cerebral level, IMO, only on an emotional one.

Madrid had Mendy beat on a ball Vini hit off the post and a second one Benzema shot wide, could have easily been 4-1. Courtois saved all of Chelsea's 4 other shots on target fairly easily.
