However, I hate it in the sense that it can just kill an exciting game with 35 minutes remaining like it did tonight.

I mean, what killed the game was Chelsea giving up four goals and only scoring two over two legs.

Anything that prevents PKs, I'm in favor of. I've not heard a better alternative.

I think most of you guys don't understand that away goals was a response to exactly what was happening when there wasn't a tie breaker for away games. Its not like it started out as the tie breaker and is just being left in there because it was an orginal rule.

A shite ton of the games were boring bus parking affairs so that the away team could force a 0-0 tie and then try to win at home.

The games are better for it, even as imperfect as it is.

Now, I definitely agree that once the second game goes to ET, it should be wiped out.

I love away goals simply because it's the only way in the sport you can have a team go from trailing to ahead in one goal. That's the best kind of drama.

I understand why they did it, but I still would prefer the old way compared to how it is now.

Of course, a Chelsea fan bitching about something. Victim complex.

Golden goal?

Something this stupid would have been laughed out of the room in any other sport but of course it's embraced by soccer. Why do the dumbest people have to be in charge of one of the best sports?

How is it a complete disaster? It makes complete and 100% sense. It's the only thing that makes sense. The object of the game is to score. Do it and you win.

Genuinely looking forward to the bs excuse response...

Did you watch soccer back then??

Everyone hated it

that's why extra time is played to the end which makes way more sense.

That's fine you can play extra time to the end if you want but then it should go to Golden Goal over penalties and away goals should never even have been thought of as a possibility.

Because I can still imagine how it must have been. Sure, it may be more exciting now, but I don't care about that.

it was pretty bad

especially when a match ended with a fluke and the other team had no chance to get it back. People bitched about it until it was changed.

Its not hockey

If you didn't want to lose on a fluke goal, score more during regulation.

Of course teams that lose will complain about wanting another chance to come back.

You are helpless sometimes

quote:

The golden goal rule was introduced to stimulate offensive flair and to effectively reduce the number of penalty shootouts. However, it was widely thought that golden goal rules encouraged teams to play more defensively to safeguard against a loss. Teams often placed more emphasis on not conceding a goal rather than scoring a goal, and many golden-goal extra time periods remained scoreless

That still happens.

I would bet that teams would be more aggressive than they were if you did away with shootouts, then they would know that the game will not end unless someone scores.
