I'm with you on all of that. I want to emphasize the word "ultimately". Don't want it mistaken with the word "total".

Re-watching the final highlights is vomit inducing though.

The tackle, the mistakes, Mane hitting the post. Just total shite luck.

Yeah, although I take solace in the fact that Madrid really didn’t have a clear cut chance created all game. Outside of the horrendous errors, we went toe to toe with them and kept them largely contained and a non-threat.

I know, stats mean nothing when you’re staring at an L. The only stat that really counts is goals. But it’s encouraging nonetheless.

I really don't see the difference in calling the season a total failure and ultimately a failure, because I don't believe either statement is true.

Which is perfectly fine. To each their own in this case.

Onwards and upwards.

Well they did have the two breakaways that took last ditch tackles/blocks from Robertson and Lovren but I agree. I’ll gladly admit it’s a shite moral victory but considering our defense has been shite on so much and everything this team has gone through I’ll take it

Good lord, trying to wade through the crap in this thread, to get to some interesting thoughts/discussions, was painful...

It will be interesting to see if the result of this match will change transfer plans.. particularly in goal..

Fekir appears all but done... I have to imagine that changes the shape of the team...

When I get back home, I want to re-watch the match... Im a glutton for punishment..

Well the last 5 minutes we were throwing the kitchen sink to get two goals. I wasn’t talking about that.

What do you count as a clear-cut chance? I'd count Isco's chance in the 48th that went off the post, and his goalmouth chance in the 60th as clear cut chances. I'd also count Ronaldo's header as a clear cut chance, but I don't know if the offside was awarded to Benzema or Ronaldo. The commentary live text suggests that the offside flag was for Benzema even though Ronaldo was off-side. Still it was a good performance to limit Madrid's chances to the few they got.

Both Benzema and Ronaldo were offside, but the flag was for Benzema. Since the initial header was offside as well, I wouldn't count either chance regardless of which one the AR was actually calling.

But if the Ronaldo chance went in, it would have almost certainly counted, right? I mean we are getting into the minute semantics, but since the flag was for Benzema and not Ronaldo, I'd still count it as a chance. Regardless 'Pool did a great job containing Ronaldo other than that one chance. I mean, Ronaldo only had one shot on target. That's a great defensive performance.

I thought the back 4 did a very good job.. the first Bale goal was just great individual brilliance...

It was a rough day TF, but finally back to business. So moving forward saying Fekir is done (just hypothetical). GK if we can land one of the big three, DM Jorghino would be perfect but probably a Ndidi which is fine, a replacement that can spell our wings Zaha would be insane. The big question s what to do at CB? I know you get another one but do you go after a big money guy or is Lovren really our VVD partner? i can't believe I am even entertaining this but he has been really good. I just want some opinions to give me something to else to discuss. Does Gomez move to his natural position?

I dunno...

I think Jorginho to City looks imminent.. though if Fekir is our guy, I dont see how a mf with Keita and Jorginho works...Id much rather a true DM than a DLP...

Ndidi would be great, but I'd really like to see us get the other guy from Napoli... Diawara (though Napoli prob doesn't sell both).. An added bonus would be their international partnership for Guinea.. Ive seen us recently linked with Lucas Torreira.. He looks like a player too.. though we'd have a midget midfield..

Assuming we won't go with another huge signing a CB... I hope the links to Lascelles are true... I really like him and dont understand why he's not going to the WC...

I am not sold on Zaha... I think he's a fine player, but something about him just says he has found his level... I think he'd be frustrating to have in the team...

I'd love to throw big money at Werner... can play all 3 positions up top and is young... thats a pipe dream im afraid.. Bailey is the other one who may be more gettable..

I was a bit drunk, so probably just forgot them. The Isco one definitely. I remembered the Ronaldo one but didn’t count it because of the offsides.

There may have been 2 or 3. That’s still amazing that we held them to that.

After seeing Jorginho to Napoli looks likely, my first thought was let's just overpay for Diawara before City get it done knowing they're likely not to sell both

Probably not the best idea, but I admit I'm jealous. I like Jorginho

So apparently we've sent in a bid for Fabinho according to some decently reliable French sites. This with the Fekir links and we're trying to start off with a bang

frick domestic cups. I subscribe to the Wenger theory that finishing 4th or better trumps the FA and/or league cup.
