I think its unlikely to happen for the other reason... FSG sanctioning a £50mm + move for someone about to 29... meaning very little to no resale value...
Id love for them to prove otherwise...
Even if we don't get VVD in Jan and plan to go back this summer, we still need another CB in Jan... at a minimum..

The ESPN FC 100 (LINK)
ESPN has chosen 10 at each field position (including manager).
Attacking mid - Coutinho is ranked #5 (up from #8 last year).
Wide forward - Mane is ranked #2 (last year unranked) and Salah is ranked #7 (last year unranked).
Firmino is not chosen in either the Forward or Striker categories. And, as much as I love Bobby, I can't totally disagree being that those are difficult categories to get chosen in because that's where all the world's "stars" are generally found.
Klopp is not chosen in the top 10 managers which I definitely think is a joke.
