Possession isn't everything... US were far better shooting the ball on target tonight and that's what wins matches

i appreciate women’s soccer for what it is, but I don’t know how anybody can watch this and say they play the same game.

Lol. WE NEED AS MUCH MONEY AS THE MEN.

the 2 semis and the final are all being played in Lyon (capacity 57,900)

the 3rd place match is being played in Nice (capacity 35,100)

the other 3 QF matches have been/will be played in...

Le Havre (England/Norway - official attendance: 21,111 - capacity: 24,000)

Valenciennes (Italy/Netherlands - capacity: 22,600)

Rennes (Germany/Sweden - capacity: 28,600)

organizing committee was banking on France being in THIS QF match in Paris with the USA since this is the only stadium being used this round with capacity > 30,000 at 45,600 (official attendance: 45,595... needed 5 more people to hit official capacity)

It's a lot like basketball. Same rules (although basketball does have some variations) but with a very noticeably different on-field/court product. The athleticism is often the limiting factor that shows up in ways like a lack of dunking or explosiveness of attacking play, depending on the sport. A lot of the mental errors in women's soccer are simply a matter of the limited professional schedule along with the quality of coaching in the women's game.

Best player tonight was Dunn

I wish our men's team had the kind of depth to take our 4-5 best attacker and move them to LB and profit. I guess we sorta did that with Beasley a few years ago but LB is a black hole for us.

Ellis just said they changed tactics with the lead to force France to possess the ball more because they knew France preferred to counter attack and press. I'd say it worked.

The technical skills are similar, but I see a lot more failures of technique too, especially with regards to body position. For example, a player like Santi Cazorla, smaller than many of these women, rarely made technical mistakes.

The refreshing aspect of the women's game is that there is way less diving, but I ascribe that to the fact that the difference between the smallest player and the largest player is much more slight than in the men's game.

No need for name calling. I don’t call you any names and I expect the same from you

If you’re interested in placing a wager on the match please let me know. It all comes to an end for Rapinoe and the United States of America Tuesday

I'd go back to the coaching and professional situations, too. A lot of the technical and tactical things are more of a matter of elite training and intense competition. It's a bit self-fulfilling that way. Many people won't watch women's soccer because it does lag behind in quality, and the quality won't improve (or will do so exceedingly slowly) due to the lack of resources going into sport.

If you could avoid spewing absolute idiocy all over the place, I wouldn't point it out.

The gulf between's men's and women's basketball and men's and women's soccer is not even remote. At least women's soccer it somewhat resembles the same sport. Women's basketball is unwatchable in every way.

Has the US women’s basketball team lost to a club team of U15 boys?

There are obvious technical (and even tactical) flaws in the women's game. Please do not be ignorant of this. Watch the keeper and back line play on most of the women's teams in this cup for the most glaring errors if you don't believe me. Skill and athleticism aside, you should not be badly out of position at the very least.

I don’t know, but if you took a talented AAU basketball team of high school freshman, they would comfortably beat even a team of the best women’s basketball players in the world. They wouldn’t be able to overcome the huge athleticism gap men (even very young men) naturally have over women.

I try to enjoy women’s sports for what they are. We all know they can’t match what men do, but there is still entertainment to be had sometimes. I like women’s soccer at the World Cup level. Women’s basketball is unwatchable, though.

We were lucky to win.

France had too much possession, outclassed us for much of the game, but our defense and goalkeeping held up. That is a relief because many were worried that the back line and goalkeeper would get us out of the cup. For Rapinoe's faults on the defensive end, her ability to shoot the ball was key to winning the game.

We must develop players better or we will not be close to many European teams in 4 years.

The one benefit of the women's game is that there is no over-reliance on physicality, and thus you don't often see teams use the long ball. The teams generally play the ball on the ground, and use compact systems which can lead to a pretty good game, overall.

I'd imagine they could.
