The U.S. diverges all the way to the last stages of a player’s development. In other places around the world, the late teenage years are a kind of finishing school, a period when elite players grow into their bodies, sharpen their technical ability and gain a more sophisticated understanding of game tactics. At the same time, they are engaged in a fierce competition to rise through the ranks of their clubs and reach the first team (the equivalent of being promoted from a minor-league baseball team to the big-league club).

An elite American player of that age is still likely to be playing in college, which the rest of the soccer-playing world finds bizarre. He plays a short competitive season of three or four months. If he possesses anything approaching international-level talent, he probably has no peer on his team and rarely one on an opposing squad. He may not realize it at the time, but the game, in essence, is too easy for him.

So many quotes that perfectly describe the situation here and make your idea ridiculous, I really hope you actually read the article.

Now we find out the real motivation behind the thread. It is about dumping on soccer and title 9 at the same time. Bonus points! Maybe we can get this thread moved to another board where you will get more support for that? It's been seven pages and not one poster has agreed with the premise?

I don't think many hearts and minds are changing here.

For many schools, like LSU, soccer is a women's only sport. Volleyball and gymnastics are other sports that are predominantly women-only at colleges, as are both at LSU.

The USWNT has now won three Women's World Cup titles, the first country to do that. The US men have never won a title.

Many NCAA men's sports were dismantled, despite popularity, in order to balance scholarships between men's and women's teams, in order to comply with Title IX.

This explains why more colleges in the US don't offer men's soccer scholarships or compete for NCAA men's soccer championships.

It may be, with rising amounts of money from conference networks, that men's soccer is added at more schools.

Even so, it would probably take at least a decade for men's soccer participation to grow to the level of women's programs.

Maybe then, the US men will become more of a force to be reckoned with in the world of soccer.

College soccer would hinder, not help, the USMNT

Dude you must live in the boonies. Kids grow up playing soccer these days. Hell I'm 29 and ALL my friends in grade school played soccer at some level for some period of time. You're acting like soccer just isn't available to kids and that's not true.

Recap of OP

OP saying Title IX led to more young women playing soccer. Get responses saying "College soccer players can't win at international level."

Op realizes that people are not reading the OP, just skimming and knee-jerking a response. OP attempts to clarify, gets same responses.

Repeat ad nauseum.

I can see your thought process there.

Title IX the reason the USA is (...) not a men's power

That's where you lose us. We were lagging behind other countries way before Title IX.

We didn't qualify for the world cup finals from 1954-1986. Title IX does not appear to be a significant factor either way.

Because you're wrong. The women's game is very different from the men's, and college soccer is terrible for the men's game. It would be better for the men's game if all colleges stopped offering soccer.

Op took a lot of heat for only being half wrong. Title IX is a key component of why the women's program is dominant and having more men's collegiate soccer would make for more professional men's soccer players. It just likely wouldn't make us any better on the national team level. It's all about culture and economic incentive. College is a huge economic incentive for our ladies to play, it's not for our men.

It has to start somewhere.

We know this how...?

Feel free to quote me where I said college players on the national team would help us win. Take your time...

Bottom line is, the USA is the fourth most populous nation on earth, and richer than any nation more populous, and most less populous.

You have to accept the occasional loss to smaller nations, but consistent losses are unacceptable.

If i thought the system we had in place had a chance in hell of ever making the USA a consistent international soccer power, I'd have written a different thread. I don't.

He wasn't half wrong.

He said a=b and a+c=d therefore b+c=d

His major problem was the a=b part.

And those in power agree the old system wasn't working and are revamping it. Just not in the way you detailed. We tried to tell you that repeatedly.

We already have a start. Here's an article from December detailing some changes that will be coming. LINK

Add those changes to what MLS is currently doing and you will see improvements in just a few years.

The way to fix US soccer is for the MLS to create a fully-developed academy system and (preferably) a legitimate second-tier league.

Because by the time college comes around it's too late.

I know. I was trying to put it as simply as possible for the OP.
