Thoughts on ODP tryouts for son...?

My boy is starting U13. They have State Cup at the end of the season, where without a doubt they'll face the best teams in the state. My son played up for that tournament last year and was pretty shocked at the level of play from the opposing center mids (3 of the 4 teams he played had really good talent in that position)...
So, I want to take him to ODP tryouts this year to see the centers from these clubs (MS Rush, IFC, HFC). Is that crazy? I don't want him on the ODP squad, but I don't want him shocked at the end of the year when he has to play the other centers.
My wife thinks it's stupid to try out for a team you don't want to be on. I think it's a great way to size up the competition at the beginning of the season.

Waste of money
Very expensive and tons of politics

Tryouts is $30. Two and half hours of training/tryouts with an hour break in between. I thought that was a good price to have my boy go at it with the MS Rush kids, even if the two other clubs don't show up. They won U13 last year, and I expect they're the favorites this year. IDK, it's a long way to drive.

Still paying to try out is a joke
but the actually ODP team is expensive a frick, is what i was getting at.
I went to a try out, and was like meh i don't want to do it. The coach just kept calling saying make sure you get your payment in on time to ensure your spot on the team.

I like your idea, but generally agree with SCH. I think it is worth it for you to spend the $30 just to get him around those players. Don't get sucked in to ODP though.

The parents of the U13 kids last year who were ODP made tryouts sound like a joke, they said if you pay...you're on the team.
I still think the formality of being judged by coaches you don't know is good for a young player. Get accustomed to showing what you can do. Being judged is a part of life, may as well get experience with it doing what he loves.

If you son is already on a travel team, look if there are anymore in the area that play in a high division.
Or get with other parents and research summer tournaments that bring in a large amount of teams from where ever. Push the team to play in those.
I know when i was a kid and we found out we were matched up from a team a few divisions up or from another region known for good soccer. We stepped our game up.

Yea, hopefully they'll evaluate for the first session then run them at some point in a scrimmage scenario. Just be interesting to see where they put my son and who he'll go up against.
Hell, he gets a T shirt as well.
No way I'm driving up to Jackson to make the training sessions. Our weekends are full of soccer as is, adding more would just be insane.

It's unfortunate that we have to play in a "league" of sorts to qualify for State Cup, which could get you into regionals/nationals. The local clubs from LA (Mandeville, Fire, BRSC) put forth great U13 teams, there are just very few tournaments where everyone plays.

If he does get to play against those better players, the 30 bucks is probably worth it. However how do you know they will be there?
Did he attend any camps this summer?

I don't know if HFC will be there, but IFC and Rush are right there. Seems like at least some good players would come out. I imagined they would be the ODP team, basically like a Jackson area all-stars team. I'd hope some Oxford kids show up, but who knows?
He went to the residential BRSC camp and worked with a semi pro guy who trains a mixed group of local kids.

I did it and they ask him to stay

It's well worth it to go to the try out to see where he stands.

I hear good things about Southern States. They train out of Hattiesburg.

What is this?
ETA: Crazy, didn't know that exists...never played them and had no idea they had a place in Pearl River...hmmm. Anything would be better than the BS coaching my boy gets now.

Some folks here in Birmingham that are tired of the “big club” experience have switched and results I’ve heard are good although there are some drawbacks as well. I hear the coach is very good which is obviously a great place to start. Good luck!

We've chosen not to do the ODP in the past. I've heard that they pull in a lot of players to make a team, and at some point, with league games and tournaments, it just didn't make sense to add on more practices and games. I'd expect you'll start league games this year at U-13. It's a big burden.
We're now faced with the decision for regional PDP tryouts. I'm still of the same mindset regarding limiting the amount of travel, but like you mentioned, l might let my son tryout to let him be on the field with some stronger players during tryouts. If we to play on the team (if selected), we're looking at 2 hours travel. With two kids playing, and one on a school team, it's overkill for our family.
Southern states has a good program, but you better be ready to travel in a big way. I've seen their plans to build a top notch facility, and discussed it with their director and owner. They're well on their way. The main drawback is that your kid will be playing with kids from all over. Kids usually want to be on teams with their buddies. Not sure how often they practice in PR, but it'd be worth looking into.
If your kid needs better coaching, you've got a huge decision to make. Decide how much travel fits into your schedule, establish the end game for your son and go from there.

This whole thread just makes me hate the state of youth soccer in the US even more.
We're having debates like this while kids are playing basketball on every street corner in America for free.

Basketball is just as guilty. Sure there are neighborhood pickup games, but AAU cost and travel is similar. Youth sports in the US is a business.

Well that's what hasn't been established. He's a top level club player, but beyond that who knows?
He'll likely kick for the football team, run track, be on the sailing team, and play soccer in jr/high school (7th-12th grade) at Stanislaus...so outside of some regional squad I'm not sure there is much end game. It's got to get in motion now, because he starts boys school next year.
Hopefully someone from Southern will be at ODP tryouts, I'll ask around.
