I think the argument is people will watch anything with America plastered on it. Professional curling hasn't exactly taken off.
where are the olympic watch parties then?
Someone actually argued that the watch parties were made up by the media.....how in denial can some people be

So you grew up in a shithole town where the entire population didn't have more than $5000, everyone was prejudiced and ignorant and you're essentially trying to brag about it?
I get the feeling this covers a lot of posters here.

I enjoyed the US team's run as much as anyone. My eyes were glued to the TV for the entire game and I was legitimately upset when we lost.
However, am I now supposed to care about MLS here in the US? Do I care when KC plays?
No.
If I'm to be absolutely honest, I mostly cared to see the United States win.

i believe the non-US games are getting massive ratings increases, too
plus with the new EPL/Bundesliga contracts/ratings, it's improving/emerging without any association to the USNT

Something tells me you already lost.

not sure why you're getting all this backlash
small town America does show up for other sports
I graduated with a class of 92 and we sold out the big 3 sports

People keep saying this. But I'm still not sure why it matters.
I thought it was pretty obvious to the topic at hand. If people are only watching to root for the US, soccer isn't going to "take off" when the WC isn't going on.

Think weekend matches outside of us were drawing around a 5.0...which is a really nice rating
Posted on 7/2/14 at 12:22 pm to TigerSaints318
Who said it would? If soccer gains even 1 new fan who regularly watches games, then it's a net positive for the sport in this country. Of course everyone who watched the US play is not a "soccer fan" and never will be. But some will.

something tells me your other 224 posts have been equally as useless as your 225th post.

Because I'm Killz and these tards are just a pompous cliche who believe their remarks rustle me when in fact I laugh at their pathetic attempts.
Exactly. My graduating class was around 100 and pretty much the entire town showed up for football and basketball...especially football. Didn't hurt that we had multiple state championships, but all towns in the conference (titles or not) were that way.
We most definitely showed up for the Big 3 sports, infact moreso than metropolitan schools such as KC and STL schools. I know this because we had to play several big city schools to reach state title games.

I agree. I don't see what this has to do with "Small Town America" though.
Your point is an obvious one...people don't care enough about the sport itself.

Umm, this is true for every single person that watched the world cup. Germans mostly tuned in to watch Germany win. Algerians mostly tuned in to watch Algeria win.
Saints fans mostly tune in to watch the Saints win. Cardinals fans mostly tune in to watch the Cardinals win.
It's mostly why people watch sports! To watch their team win. And why are you a fan of, say, the Cowboys or Saints or the Cubs... because you were born there (or had family born there). I was born in the U.S.A. so I root for U.S.A. Why is this so hard for the anti-soccer crowd to understand?

So I'm wrong, right?
If I'm so wrong, why do most small towns (population less than $5,000) not even offer soccer as a sporting option?
We had football, basketball, track & field, and baseball. All other small towns of similar size spread out thru the state offered the same thing. If you wanted to play soccer, you would have to travel to a larger city nearly 1.5 hours away.
If you liked soccer in my town, you were stereotyped by adults.
The football coaches used soccer to insult a player who wasn't performing at 100 percent. In their eyes, there was nothing worse than soccer. That sport was for girls.
Do you see where I'm going with this?
If America is to embrace soccer, it needs to happen in small town America too.
END OF THREAD
Probably very few.
The vast majority of athletes come from decent-sized cities or the surrounding metro areas.

What the hell else were they going to do? Sit around and watch the cars rust?
Soccer doesn't need Podunk America to back the sport.

I think the reason why small towns don't have more involvement is b/c of the lack of colleges that offer mens soccer. If you grow up in any small town around here, and your dream is to play sports for your favorite team, LSU, then why waste your time perfecting your soccer skills? I live in a small town, and we do have a soccer program. But after U10 we have to beg kids to play to field a team.

I have yet to see anyone deny most Americans watch the WC because the USA was in it. I just don't get how it's an "argument" or what it's an argument against, exactly.
I think I'm going to give soccer another try. I tried the EPL because the Red Sox ownership group bought Liverpool, so I think I'm going to watch them again.
