Ok the obvious effect is that people that do not necessarily follow the MLS but follow European football/soccer may/will now pay more attention to the MLS. But in your opinion will it move the needle as far as soccer in America as a whole. Will it create more soccer fans. I am old enough to remember Pele coming to the NASL and I believe that he created more fans.

Probably a little at first

Maybe at first, but it won't last. MLS has 1 or 2 games a week on national TV/FS1, and almost the rest are DOUBLE locked behind a paywall. A very passive soccer or sports fan isn't going to pay the extra for MLS, even if they already pay for apple tv.

I'm sure Miami will get a bunch of TV games early on, as well as the few games apple shows with a normal apple tv subscription. But eventually they're gonna want to make money on this so they'll move messi to the MLS Pass tier.

I think this will help more on a local level in MLS markets. Ticket prices for inter Miami games are insane. Atlanta and charlotte are opening extra seating for their games against them.

I heard this morning that the lowest ticket price for Miami at Orlando jumped from 22$ to over 300$. The thing is that these are not new fans Soccer fans that are buying these tickets. My next question is are these after market prices or are the clubs raising the price. I guess organically with the clubs making more money by having more fans in the seats they can grow the game more.

Nope.

In the very short term sure. After a couple of weeks nobody will care anymore.

Very likely will generate interest from places that previously had zero interest in MLS such as South America. Each of the reactions so far has been pessimistic but I am wondering what can realistically happen with Messi playing in MLS and what an optimist can envision happening as well.

We will have to re-visit this topic again soon as it appears that Ronaldo has stated that he wants to own a club which makes me think that he wants a similar deal with MLS in a year or two.

I think there are a lot of people who are into EPL and La Liga or LigaMX who will pay more attention to the league because of this. Some will stick, most probably won’t, but I think it’s obvious (by the three threads on this topic) that the transfer has created a lot of positive buzz already and he hasn’t even played a game.

It will have an effect, just like 1994 world cup or any other event. Some will go, some will stay.

This.

As far as the American public I say not much. This difference between this and Pele was back then it was not easy to watch Pele play, so when he came to America it was a new opportunity. With TV and streaming now, those Americans who have wanted to watch Messi have been doing so for years already

Ronaldo would have more effect

He appeals to everyone at mls stadiums, especially the gheys

Chicks wanna bang him, as do half the men at an mls event.

Messi is a midget, Quasimodo looking frick. Even his wife dreams off banging Ronaldo.

Ronaldo plans to buy club after retiring

Fairly sure that MLS is already cooking up a deal to bring in Ronaldo.

Messi won the World Cup six months ago… he’s closer to the best and his best than any other superstar that went to America
