The marvel that was Zinedine Zidane

I have said on here numerous times that I'm a self-avowed soccer no0b. I would say, now that 2011-2012 has come and gone, I have achieved soccer novice level. One day I will hope to attain the rank of soccer fig. In due time.
A key moment in this current transition was the realization that Zinedine Zidane was an absolutely unbelievable player. After the 2006 WC, I only knew him as a joke, a national embarrassment for the most shameful country in western Europe.
I came across this video after following some links in the youtube thread:

My question to those that watched him in his prime-- how great was he? Was he best in the world, and where does he rank among the all-time soccer greats?

I've seen that exact video multiple times. It is truly entrancing. I didn't get to watch him in his prime, but most fans viewed him as the greatest of his generation and some view him as the GOAT.

It is hard to rank players because of generational differnces. Are Messi and CR7 in the top 6, probably once their respective careers are over. Injuries are a huge factor as well. Taking all into account mine would be in NO ORDER:

All had great players around them. but Pele never proved it on the European stage. In the World Cup, none better. And that isn't really debateable. I just think he was a little overrated. Di Stefano and Puskas could be there as well. As well as Eusebio. Also Gordon Best.

Zidane was INCREDIBLE, he is the 3rd greatest player of all time in my book (but as others have said it's really hard to rank players for many reasons).
IMO one of the greatest tragedies of modern soccer is Zidane's headbutt. I hate that he will be remembered for that and not his left footed super volley (can't remember who it was against, but it was while he was with Madrid).

Not trying to be an arse but how do you rank these guys? Have you really seen any of them play more than once or twice on old crappy film?

Well I can only speak for myself, but I've gone back and watched a lot of older player's games to form my own opinion on who I like.
That being said, I prefer to lump my GOAT player's into tiers that are in no specific order. A top group of 10, then another, and so on...

He's up there.
I generally try to stick to ranking players I've seen, since it's hard to compare stats from different eras. I consider Zidane to be the second best player of my lifetime. I still think Ronaldo (Brazilian) is the best I've ever seen.

I'm far less seasoned than some on here but to me he was the best player on the pitch every time he took the field. Too bad his head butt is what most Americans remember him by.

Since we're discussing top players of all time, where does Gerd Muller rank among them? I don't know much about him except that his goal scoring numbers are ridiculous.
As for ZZ, I've watched many videos about him but unfortunately did not have the pleasure of watching him during his career. But the guy just seemed like he was on another level than everyone he played against. I admire his game and almost never think about the headbutt.
