Tactically, this team is all over the place

Watching the USMNT in the Jurgen era, I really can't pick out what the team is trying to do. I know coming in that Jurgen wasn't a tactical genius, but shite, he should be better or at least on par with Bradley and Arena.
I feel like for how much our talent pool quality has increased with JK (which has been positive), it's come at the cost of a team identity.

You can have all the talent you want but if you don't actually put them into position to succeed, you severely limit yourself

Jurgen doesn't do tactics, except "experimentally" playing players out of position.
Really disappointed in our outside backs and our wingers. Our midfield was outnumbered, but that allowed Jozy to have a strike partner and it paid off (a little, but not a lot. Hardly any possession in the final third).
Our passing and movement is poor. Maybe that's players (ie Chandler) with low soccer IQ, but I believe at least some of that is coaching.

Thats what these friendlies are for
trying out shite
if this was a major tournament then it would be one thing to get upset about.
That and he's capping the frick out of everyone even guys who are at best fringe players at their clubs abroad esp ones with duel citizenship
be patient he knows what hes doing.

I'm not just talking about these friendlies.
Since he took over in 2011, tactically, what would you say this team's identity has been?

I don't think he has ever had a set formation
some managers never do
when push comes to shove it works

"Go long, I'll boot one up from 50 yards out"
Or "just kick it"
I've noticed since I really started following that we don't particularly give a shite where we're kicking it, and most of our guys panic with the ball at their feet. 3-5 minutes every match we look really good and create scoring opportunities. The other 85 minutes we look pretty bad and it's bend to the breaking point. Maybe that's our strategy. Look just bad enough to lull the opposition into a comfort zone and then muster every ounce of skill we have into 3 plays a game and hope for a goal.
Look at the Belgium game, we got wrecked for 90 minutes and almost managed to steal the game at the end, only for the dam to finally break in the extra period.

dgaf how it looks
jurgy has shown he knows how to also adapt
some managers are stuck in their ways at making adjustments

Wasn't the Jurgy hire suppose to surpass Bradley/Arena results?
It's largely been the same.

i knew where this was going
Arena was sure fire stuck in his ways and it showed.
Bob ball worked but only got us so far and other than the Spain result vs high level competition it just didn't work.
Jurgy is also trying to fundamentally change the mentality of american soccer from playing long ball and take on pressure then just counter attack.

Where was this going? I mentioned Bob & Bruce from the beginning.
And to change that mentality, you have to be tactically sound.

You can still be tactically sound while using different formations and tactics.
The issue really comes down to playing so many new guys who have no chemistry together and who never came up together through the youth ranks.
Looks for this to change in the years to come with the changes in the youth set up giving our teams an actually identity.
There is a reason youngsters in brazil, germany, spain, italy can all slide right in bc they have been brought up playing a certain way and have some chemistry through the year.
For the longest time we just called up the same 30 guys or so with a limited player pool.

Make no mistake, I don't want Bov or Bruce back. I do want results that are better than what they produced and with Jurgen we're not really getting that.
And the chemistry argument works for friendlies, but our tactics were not well defined in the lead up to the World Cup either.

for us to get out of that group was a result

That could b/c limited player ability, that will all change this is def a long term project from top to bottom.

You try shite out by letting a young defensive midfielder play with Michael Bradley from the get-go, not by putting Bedoya, who is primarily a hustle guy, in the middle of the field and asking him to be a number 6. That's just stupid.

It's a friendly. We had a makeshift backline, not all of our starters, and 7 subs--of course it was all over the place.
Posted on 3/25/15 at 6:36 pm to StraightCashHomey21
I have to agree with SCH on this one. I was a Jurgy hater for awhile too but to get out of that group was outstanding and he's shut me up for 4 years barring some horrific collapse in 2018 qualification.
